This week, over two days, we can watch Famous, Rich and Homeless (BBC One, Wednesday, 24 June, 9pm… continues Thursday). Now, who here needs to be convinced that sleeping rough is a dreadful and tough existence? Daily beatings, fending off the cold, going hungry constantly, illness and gangrene and scraping an existence from the land. It’s obvious isn’t it? Well, those that just don’t get it and continually ignore the homeless in their commute or shout things like “gerrajob y’bum!” probably won’t get the message portrayed by a bunch of celebrities volunteering to become homeless for ten days. I mean, the impact is lessened when you know what awaits these slebs after they’ve kipped on the streets. Things like veal, manicures and tailoring… oh, and crocodile tears. Mustn’t forget those.

So, who is going to undertake homelessness with a pay-packet? In this two-part film, we’ll follow Hardeep Singh Kohli, Rosie Boycott, Bruce Jones and James, Marquess of Blandford, heir to Blenheim Palace through begging, sleepless nights and seeing first-hand the traumas that real homeless people face.
Okay?
Right then.
Of course, it’s a bit off because most people who are homeless suffer most in their solitude. Most would love a camera crew to talk to who will not only stop that feeling of going silently mad, but also, almost guarantee their protection.
You see, I understand why shows like this are made. They highlight a problem seldom spoken about on TV. Homeless people in recent years have become Britain’s invisible populace, blanked out amongst the bird shit and lamp posts, but sending a bunch of celebrities to go and mew about it seems a bit daft really. The only thing I can think of, that it’ll achieve is that it might make some people tune in where they wouldn’t normally.
However, if you want to see celebrities sleeping rough for real, you might as well wait for I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! to start… and you can guarantee there’ll be more whining in that than there will be here.
Still, at least we can chuckle at the celebrities misery for a bit.
