It's definitely silly season in TV Land. The reason I say that is because I've been reading today's internettle rumours about the reported sacking of Arlene Phillips with growing horror and dismay. Granted, with madness going on in Iran, war and famine all over the place and the World Twenty20 cricket to consider, this news will not be world-changing in the slightest, but let's consider this for a second - why on earth would you get rid of your best, or at least one of your best, judges on one of your most popular series? It just doesn't make sense.

The answer my friends is The X Factor and, more specifically, the Cheryl Cole factor. Last year the TV Talent Show rival urinated on Strictly from a medium-sized height, leaving Brucie and his rickety team of judges sodden from head to toe. Urinating metaphor aside, the ratings battle was squarely won by ITV, and you have to admit The X Factor was the best it has ever been (arguably).
But ask me what I'd rather watch between the two and I'd go for Strictly any day of the week. So, for me, there's not a great deal to fix on Strictly. Yes, Brucie is getting to the end of his presenting career and Tess Daley could be replaced by any other pouting, talentless, identikit wannabe, but the judges are really good. And last year's series was brilliant too.
I didn't particularly like the way they went a bit mental during the John Sergeant affair, and I think the judge backlash by the public took them by surprise, but Arlene is hardly to blame for this, and her knowledge and encouragement make her an entertaining watch.
So to replace her with Alesha Dixon is a bit criminal. This must be down to the BBC's reported desire to jazz up the show and make it younger. But beware - replace knowledge and credibility with vapidity and you're hopscotching down a rocky road.
Of course, this news hasn't been confirmed yet by anyone (we'll update as soon as we know), but already the Don't Sack Arlene bandwagon is up and running. Watch out for those facebook campaigns very soon...
