You might think last night's was the biggest event in the American Idol calendar, but at "only" an hour long, actually it was only about the singing. For Fox and the AI team, the much bigger event is the results show. Host Ryan Seacrest warned American viewers that the show may overrun, and to be careful setting their DVRs. Tonight, ITV2 has given it 90 minutes, and if you've managed to avoid the spoilers you'll probably be on the edge of your seat for most of it. But like I said, last night was all about the singing.
Three songs each for the final two contestants. Their own favourite performance from the whole series, a rare mention for Idol creator Simon Fuller, as he gets to choose the second song, and then each of them sings the winner's song, which this year has been co-written by judge Kara Dioguardi.
Having won the toss and elected to go second, Kris Allen sat backstage to listen to Adam Lambert reprise his haunting version of Mad World. The first time I heard this I absolutely loved it. This time? Not so much. I wrote last week that Lambert may have used up all the tricks in his box, and I certainly get the impression that listening to much of his screaming falsetto could become quite wearing. Don't get me wrong there's no doubt he's a talented guy. Just think he needs to rein it in a little more. And for this song, on this night, I really don't think he connected with it.
I don't know whether Kris Allen knew what Adam would be singing, but it was a clever move to match him with a slow and soulful version of Ain't No Sunshine. Seated at the piano he put his entire heart and soul into the performance and, barring a single bum note right at the end of the first line, he nailed it superbly. Cowell awarded the first round to Kris, and I'd have to agree with him.
Simon Fuller's choice for Adam was Change is Gonna Come, and this time he really delivered. I don't think either contestant was overly familiar with Fuller's choices, which both gave them a level playing field and tested whether they could come up with something original from a standing start in only a week. Adam pulled it off with great professionalism and aplomb. Kris Allen was given What's Going On? and chose to sing an acoustic version which didn't really come off all that well for me. This time round Coweel awarded the round "one million percent" to Adam, and once again I found I had to agree with him.
Finally, the winner's song. No Boundaries. Personally, if I'd had a hand in writing this song, I wouldn't be banging on about it. I'd be colouring up with embarrassment and hiding under the desk. A difficult song to sing, a complex lyric, and of the two Adam definitely came off better in my opinion. Actually I'll come clean and say that I thought Kris absolutely murdered the song. It sounded awful when he sang it, whereas Adam managed to make it sound OK.
I think Cowell handed round three to Adam too, and on balance, having agreed with him all night, here I was again on his side. So 2-1 to Adam, but would the American public agree? Last week, less than a million votes (i.e. only just over 1% of the total) separated these two guys, so you know the result will be close. Before the cut I said "if you've managed to avoid spoilers." Sadly, this year, again, I haven't. A Canadian friend's Facebook status gave it away for me, and next year I am DEFINITELY crawling under a rock between Wednesday night and Friday night of finale week, but I wouldn't do that to you. If you're still not in the know, you'll have to watch tonight. Should be a good show.
That's the end of my American Idol journey for another year - whatever the result is I won't be posting again - so I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have and I'll see you in a couple of months on the reality song trail again for this year's X Factor!
