The Eurovision Song Contest kicks off this weekend (BBC One, Saturday, 16 May, 8pm) with Jade Ewen heading off to, well, probably lose. The pop spectacular takes place in the huge Olympiyski Stadium in Moscow and, for the first time in six hundred and thirty eight years, Terry Wogan won’t be manning the mic, this year, being replaced by Graham Norton. Of course, many of us will be tuning in to see what disasters their are… it’s part of the charm isn’t it? Eurovision 1979 – Peter, Sue & Marc

Bin bags. Bin lids. Hosepipes. Pinking shears. Just some of the instruments used on this odd Eurovision number.

Eurovision 1990 – Azúcar Moreno

A technical hitch and the band walking off stage barely 10 seconds into the song. Marvellous.

Eurovision 2002 – Michalis Rakintzis

Bad synth pop and dumb futuristic sci-fi vigilante get-up. Only in Eurovision…

Eurovision 2004 – Aleksandra & Konstantin

One of the most peculiar noises ever to come from Eurovisionland. Someone playing a wind instrument that looked like a hallowed out turnip and a woman who sounds like she needs her tonsils and sinuses replacing.

Eurovision 1981 – Marty Brem

What do you get if you cross a bloke in a white dinner jacket and a woman in an American football helmet and a leotard? No. Me neither.

And, far from the worst ever, here’s a weird little bonus favourite of mine. I wish I knew what Forbes where saying in their flop, ‘Beatles’. You can only hope it contains the lyric ‘They all looked pretty cool when they grew beards didn’t they? Yeah, yeah, yeah…’
