We’ve been talking about Psychoville – the new dark comedy from the incredibly fertile minds of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith – on here for over a year. Occasionally. When those fertile minds happened to shed the odd photon of light onto what they were thinking. Well now there’s a full-blown press pack available from the Beeb, the show is coming soon – no, really! – and judging from that photo above, we’re in for something special.
With character names like Mr Jelly and Mr Jolly, Judge Pennywise, Grumbly and Christopher Biggins (oh, no, he’s real. Sort of.) I’m laughing already.
One or more of these names might match the list of characters that could only be found in a world invented by these two warped – in the best possible way – individuals: “An embittered one-handed clown; a desperately misguided midwife; a lovestruck telekinetic dwarf; a blind avaricious collector; and a serial-killer-obsessed man-child.”
These are the main, apparently unconnected characters, who we meet in the first episode and who are drawn together through the one thing they share: the receipt of an anonymous, black-edged card bearing the chilling message: “I know what you did…”
It’s been a year coming, and the excitement has waxed and waned but now it’s pretty much “wax on” around here. We’ve had our fill of turkeys in the comedy department over the past few months. Now finally it looks like there might be something on its way to get our teeth into, and then gnaw on until the blood dribbles down our chins and we have to pick those little white gristly bits out from between our teeth.
