South Park. A show that has split opinions down the middle without a care. A show that really knows how to kill off a main character (in Chef’s case, impressively… in Kenny’s case, repeatedly). Well, on the brand new channel Comedy Central (formerly Paramount Comedy), there’s a brand spanking episode which see the kids of South Park coming up with The Funniest Joke Of All Time. Creative differences rock their friendships in the all-new episode (Season 13a) called ‘Fishsticks’, which airs tonight. With the kids having the best ever joke, what do they do? Well, they decide to share it with late-night US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, comedienne Sarah Silverman’s ex. Kimmel plugs the joke in his routine and everyone loves it and of course, the boys are thrilled… however, somebody tries to take all the credit. And that certain somebody won’t get away with it lightly – the joke is sure to be on them. You can watch a clip of the show here and, for a Q&A with creator Matt Stone, click over the jump!
What’s the most outrageous viral video you’ve seen?
Matt Stone: There’s this Brazilian fart porn that’s pretty amazing. Girls farting on guys, totally X-rated. It bent my brain and I can’t really unsee that. That bell’s been rung and it can’t be unrung. It’s too bad that I saw it.
How much stuff do you dig up online?
MS:A bit – as much as anybody else. That’s part of our super-pop culture. There’s some super funny stuff. There’s nothing funnier that people actually tripping or falling off a ladder. That is always going to be the funniest thing in the world. But there’s a huge difference between making something that’s funny for a few minutes and something that’s funny for 22mins – the length of our shows. Viral comedy is great for the internet but we have to make something that people want to sit there and watch – hopefully.
What difference has the internet made to you?
MS:We were one of the first shows to really benefit from it. Even back in the day – in 1997 when we started – on a super-slow connection at six frames a second – you could watch our stuff because it’s really crude animation, primary colours that are easy for the compression schemes to work with. Then we were all over YouTube when it was invented, so the internet really helped new people find the show. People can catch up or watch the two funniest jokes and we love that stuff.
Do you have a favourite blog?
MS: I like gadget blogs a lot. I’m a tech geek.
What’s your gadget of the week?
MS: I just ordered a Kindle, that Amazon thing – that’s how dumb I am. But I think I might like it. Something that can hold 1,500 books? That could be pretty amazing.
What about your iPod Touch or iPhone; you can read on that.
MS:I don’t even have an iPhone. I’m a Blackberry user. My wife has an iPhone and I think it’s great. We did an iPhone application for South Park that got r-e-j-e-c-t-e-d!
What do you make of Twitter?
MS: I’m not into that. I don’t have time for social networking. Through luck I have a lot of really good friends I really care about. I don’t need any more friends. I love every friend I have but I could use with a bit less. Following twitter or Facebook shit? Nah – I got enough going on.
