Last night, while watching Kirstie’s Homemade Home (Channel 4, Thursday, 23 April, 8pm) I once again got complete and utter Lifestyle Envy. The green eyed monster in me briefly overtook common sense and I started to holler, mentally, that this was the most crass show on the box. Economic Meltdown around my ears, and there’s Kirstie bloody Allsopp, having a gay old time tarting up an old house… probably not her only home… just for kicks! I mean, the sheer bloody nerve of it! And then, thankfully, that fleeting notion passed and I got lost in Kirstie’s world like it was an episode of Rosemary and Thyme.

There’s a bit of me that thinks Kirstie’s Homemade Home could be renamed Kirstie Shows Off Her Vast Array Of Nice Coats With Huge Buttons On Them. There’s no hiding a nice coat and Allsopp has an abundance of them. She’s got more nice coats than I’ve got average clothes.
Ms Nice Coats went off, once again, showing us loads of cool British “artisans” (I put that in quotes because she says the word about once every two minutes in the show) who make loads of really cool things. Last week, it was a potter and a glass blowing man. This week, she went off to meet a really nice lady who made bespoke wallpaper, and another equally pleasant person who made stained glass windows. All of these “artisans” are all amazingly cheery people, which means they either love their work and know how extraordinarily lucky they are… or they overcharged grossly, which makes it easier to sleep at night.
While I agree with what Kirstie preaches… which is basically, don’t lean on Ikea too much, especially when there’s loads of ace bootsales and junk shops knocking around, it’s a bit daft to assume we’ve all got the inclination to buff up old furniture and the like, after a rotten week at work or whatever.
That said, it’s fine that this show may not be the most practical of affairs. That’s because Kirstie Allsopp is perfectly pleasant to look at on screen, as she skips like a giddly toddler around antiques and nice people making nice things. It’s a dreamy world that I’ll probably never inhabit… but it’s a cool enough place to visit on a Thursday night with a pot of tea brewed.
