TV Review: Kirstie's Homemade Home, Channel 4, Thursday, 16 April, 8pm

kirstie allsopp on a tractor.jpgKirstie Allsopp's TV transformation has been quite staggering. If you've flicked over to More4 recently and caught the early shows of Location Location Location Relocation Location, you will have seen just how uptight and awkward she was on camera. Now, she's bullish, ebullient and posho-fun. These are the reasons that she's been given her own show, which started last night. Kirstie's Homemade Home (Channel 4, Thursday, 16 April, 8pm) saw our property lovey considering our credit crunch needs. She showed us all how to mend and make stuff and celebrate local glass-blowers and potters. In fact, she'd made the home equivalent of Hugh's Chicken Run. Lovely, idealistic living... although not necessarily completely practical.

Kirstie Allsopp did two things very well last night. Firstly, she wore very nice coats. Kirstie always has nice coats. You ask any woman and they'll tell you: "Kirstie Allsopp has really nice coats". The other thing she did was go around in her nice coats to car-boots and junk sales, looking for bargains. You see, she's doing up a house she bought at auction... which is a complete tip... and doing it up with second hand stuff, things made by local types and 'artisans'. It's all very lovely and designed to appeal to those of us frightened of spending money in the credit crunch.

So, off Kirstie went to meet, quite possibly, the nicest man to ever appear on television. Even nicer than Tony Hart. This man was a glass blower and he radiated loveliness. The kind of man who everyone says 'Oh, isn't he a really nice man?' Talented too. He rattled off a load of really cool glassware which has Kirstie cooing all over the shop. She also swooned over Cath Kidston who has a very nice house indeed.

Of course, it was all very nice to watch. The only negative you'd have is by getting lifestyle envy. Kirstie has a life that clearly enables her to do fun things like glass blowing and pottery, not hampered by a relentless office job. Naturally, I could have a go at her about it all... but in TV terms, it's rather sweet that she's promoting these people.

Kirstie also has nice taste in things in general... save for a dodgy brass 'WOW' spelled out on the wall. I'm never sure about these daft little statements that people make. Still though, if she was making a point about reusing what other people consider tat, then she did alright.

However, while promoting local glass blowers is all very nice, if you're a family suffering in this recession then, let's be honest, a man who makes bespoke glassware is going to be overlooked in favour of the 10 Glasses For A Quid offer at Asda or wherever. Sometimes, the supermarkets are cheaper than the bootsale.

Thankfully though, that's small fry. The show is very cheery and pleasant and, even though it's lacking in balls, that's no worry to me. Allsopp has good taste in stuff in general and as TV goes, it's pleasantly distracting and makes you daydream of a life where you can sit and muse over these middle-class design issues. It's a mild rebuttal against The Ikea Generation and a lovely holiday in Kirstie Allsopp's mind. Not a horrible place to be.
