TV Review: Gok’s Fashion Fix, Channel 4, Tuesday 14 April, 8pm

gokwanfashion.jpgGok’s one of those TV personalities that completely divide opinion, so I should say from the outset that I’m pro-Gok. Well, it’s more a relative thing actually, as I much prefer him to, say, Trinny and Susannah who seem to put people in the same outfit every single week and have rules like Never Wear Colour With Black. Huh? That can’t be right, surely?

Anyway, he returned to Channel 4 last night with his fashion magazine show, the likes of which had disappeared from our screens for a few years – I know The Clothes Show is still on somewhere, but it’s hardly at the forefront of the minds of the television-viewing public nowadays.

He started by stating that women (not much men’s fashion here, I’m afraid) spend a £1000 a year on clothes, but only wear a third of what they have in their drawers and cupboards. Time to streamline he said, and while he was referring to our wardrobes, he could have been describing the show itself. Co-host Alexa Cheung is out, there’s no studio (and as such no studio guest), and just one representative of designer fashion.

She’s Britt, her pug Pixie goes with her everywhere, and she’s a complete cliche. As with the first series, Gok dresses some models in High Street wear, and pits those outfits against designer ones; Britt picks out a particularly expensive sheer wool cardigan: “It looks like an angel sneezed on it!” she says. Apparently that’s a good thing.

“Shop less, wear more”, that’s Gok’s credit crunch mantra for this series, and to put his words into action, he’s going to create a 24-piece capsule wardrobe for one woman each week, including shoes and accessories. (No mention of underwear, but who can afford socks in a recession?) 24?? There is absolutely no way I could do that – admittedly, it’s a lovely set of clothes, and they all go together and can interchange, but wouldn’t that just be utterly dull? Not convinced Gok, not convinced.

Elsewhere, larger ladies tried out different swim suits and found that strapless isn’t the best idea (is it for anyone?!), he forced Janet Street Porter out of her beloved designer wear and into something more affordable for the Brit Awards, and the designer outfits won the face-off at the end. Kinda undermining the whole show. Better luck next week, Gok…
