With only a couple of weeks left when they could use the "Judges' Save" this week was the (surprise!) week they elected to use it, in a last-minute scramble that saw Simon Cowell declare "we've made a decision" while the other three judges, thinking he was about to chuck Matt Geraud out of the competition, jostled and shouted "no we haven't!" What Cowell meant, as it turned out, was that although his had perhaps been the lone dissenting voice in the discussion, he'd changed his mind.

Was it the right decision? Who knows. Cowell had preceded his declaration of good news by saying Matt had no chance of winning the competition and I think he is, as usual, bang on with that statement. So next week, will Matt be one of the two to be eliminated? That very much depends on whether he can do a better job with disco week than he did with "songs from the movies of Quentin Tarantino."

The whole show had a different feel for me this week. It was knocked off kilter by only allowing time for two of the judges to comment on each performance. The ones who are usually weak, were weak. The ones who are usually strong, were strong. And the ones, like Lil Rounds, who choose the wrong songs, still chose the wrong songs. Which begs the question: exactly what IS the right song for them? After four or five solid weeks of "wrong songs" will they ever live up to their earlier expectations.

When Matt and Lil stood side by side awaiting the falling of the sword I couldn't call it. For me, their performances had been equally bad. The decision could have gone either way and it wouldn't have surprised me. And if they don't dig deep next week, choose the right song and really nail it, then I'd expect them both to be standing there again, and both leaving.

But, and Simon alluded to this when he told the rest of the contestants not to be too pleased Matt had been saved, disco is a cruel master. Those songs sound so easy when the original artist is doing them, but it's a con. Many of them are not easy at all, and covering them is like walking across quicksand. One false step and you're stuck. Next week should be very interesting.
