One of last year’s TV highlights was The Devil’s Whore on Channel 4. What a magnificent thing of beauty that was (we voted it at number two in our end of year poll). Andrea Riseborough, Dominic West, Michael Fassbender and John Simm all on tip-top form in a rousing, gritty story set during the English Civil War. Great stuff, it really was. Now, just as the schedules seem to be reverting to lifestyle and reality shows galore, there was some good news this morning. Peter Flannery, TDW’s writer, is writing a sequel.

For all our Devil’s Whore news, reviews and interviews, go here.

The story appeared in The Guardian this morning and was met with a rather large yelp of pleasure in this living room (especially after witnessing last night’s EastEnders shoutfest).

The story said that Flannery his TDW’s collaborator, historian Martine Brent, would carry on story from the Civil War into the Restoration period.

“Peter Flannery said he and historian Martine Brant, an expert in the period, with whom he collaborated in writing The Devil’s Whore, hoped to continue the saga and were debating the possible script treatment.

He added that the obvious move was to follow the life of the central character, Angelica Fanshawe, played by award winning Andrea Riseborough, and her five year old daughter.”

That could well mean more Angelica Fanshawe and more Andrea Riseborough, who cemented herself as one of the country’s best young actresses with the role. I can’t wait.

Mind you, TDW apparently took nine years to come to the screen and eventually cost £7million to make. In these times of dwindling homegrown drama and slashed budgets, I wonder how long this sequel will take to come to the screen.
