Ade Edmondson’s unfortunate brush with a hot stove in Hell’s Kitchen reminds us that reality TV can in fact be a risky business. Maybe on certain shows it’s de rigeur to just sit there, be pampered and come to no harm but if your average celebrity is learning to dance, camping out in the jungle or honing their ice-skating skills, chances are they’re going to get hurt at some point. Here, in no particular order, is the list of recent casualties to plague the celebrity reality shows, and it makes for alarming reading. In fact, it leaves me wondering why, exactly, famous faces are queueing up to take part in these shows, when the real prize appears to be a ride in the back of an ambulance? As follows…

Andrew Castle – limped on after injuring his knee during Strictly Come Dancing rehearsals

Tom Chambers – Strictly Come Dancing’s 2008 champ hurt hisshoulder and arm while practising a tricky dance step

Rachel Stevens – suffered carpet burns while practising her Strictly Come Dancing

Alexandra Burke – the X Factor 2008 winner went down with a throat infection as X Factor live shows loomed

Ruth Lorenzo and Diana Vickers – X Factor finalist Lorenzo fell victim to a throat infection which almost stopped her from singing. Vickers, on the other hand, was forced to miss a show altogether after coming down with laryngitis

Kimberley Davies – the former Neighbours star was forced to quit the 2005 series of I’m A Celebrity…..midway through after suffering a shoulder injury.

Coleen Nolan – suffered a string of war wounds during Dancing On Ice including breaking a small bone in her wrist, and dislocating a rib just days later. Nonetheless she skated on bravely and finished fourth in the contest.

Michael Underwood – forced to pull out of Dancing On Ice with a broken ankle. He returned in the 2009 series without incident although was voted off after a few short weeks.

Suzanne Shaw – sustained fractured ankle and a cracked rib during Dancing On Ice, which she described as “more painful than childbirth” (yikes!)

Big Brother 9 house – several housemates were struck down with mystery bug midway through the series. Cue sickness and other symptoms which don’t look so nice on a live TV feed.

Hell’s Kitchen – Ade Edmondson burnt his hand on his very first night in the kitchen. And with the series only just getting underway, it remains to be seen who else will come a cropper…..
