Was I too hasty about The IT Crowd?

the IT crowd.jpgOh boy. What a dick I am. For two years straight, I gave The IT Crowd worst show of the year. I only judged it so harshly because I expected so much. I mean, it was written by Graham Linehan and I love him. I probably shouldn't tell you this... it's probably bad journalistic form or something... but I think it'll make you laugh. After giving The IT Crowd such a dubious honour, I asked Mr Linehan if he'd like to do an interview. He responded with: "With all due respect, go fuck yourself". Even when he's rude, he's funny. I could hardly blame him either... and now I'm beginning to think I may have been a little hasty.

You see, this weekend, there was a moment in my weekend when there was absolutely nothing on the box. I ended up watching The IT Crowd. I wanted to give it another chance. I'm glad I did. It made me laugh my lungs up through my nose (which left me looking a bit like Dr Zoidberg).

My relationship with The IT Crowd has always been weird. I've always not really liked it, but always wanted to. I like the cast, I love the writer... hell... the premise ain't that bad. Chris Morris was in it ferchrissakes! Maybe that was the problem... it was my problem. Everything seems so good and right from the off that I over-analysed and over-hyped in my own head. Our relationship was always doomed to fail.

At some point, I just gave up talking about the show. I didn't want to keep slagging it. It didn't seem worth it. Essentially, we went our separate ways. Then, a chance meeting, and I suddenly saw it out with another lad and became depressed. Okay, I'm stopping this relationship analogy now. Basically, not expecting anything, with my guard down, I got half a dozen really good belly laughs out of the show.

The episode I watched was the one where the two blokes (see? I really haven't watched it to the point I don't even know what the characters are called) pretended that they liked football, just to fit in. It was a real hoot. Not clever-clever satire or anything... but fun and a laugh. It's great when I remember to have fun.

And now, I'm left with the notion that I've been a complete ass and that it'll be worth going back to some old episodes to have even more fun. I've always known that Graham Linehan writes good jokes, now it's time to stop being an idiot and start laughing at them.

With all due respect, in writing the most backhanded apology to Linehan here, you come off as a complete ass, maybe an even bigger one than before.
