shameless_s06e09.jpgWith Monica gone, the Gallagher clan appear to close ranks against Norma, wondering openly what she’s still doing there. At least, Frank does, and none of the others argue. So with hardly a backward glance, except to open one more last-minute jar for Likkle Liam, Norma packs up her camper van and heads… somewhere. The only reaction from Frank is how strange the front yard looks now there’s nothing in it.

Dystin Johnson has consistently been one of the best things about Shameless for as long as she’s been in it, so I experienced a brief “Nooooo!” moment at the thought she may actually be leaving, but as Norma settled back into the container at the trucking yard where she’s stored all her stuff, and met up with an old flame, it became clear her story was not yet over.

Her meeting with “Ru” led to the offer of a permanent home and a slightly more comfortable – not to mention more highly populated – bed than the one she’d been used to, but in the end Norma decided home is where the heart is, and her heart is with the Gallagher kids. You don’t expect warmth from them, exactly, but at least her homecoming was greeted with the odd “we missed you,” which was nice.

Shane’s head injury has left him more than a little incapacitated, and Mimi and Kelly immediately go to war over who should look after him. This story gives us the line of the night, as Kelly is discussing Shane’s care with Maxine and wondering how she copes with it all day, every day. It’s OK for the most part, she says, “apart from the perverts who shit themselves just to get a bed bath.”

While still at the hospital, Kelly “helps” Paddy with his fix, only her suggestion that he chase the dragon sets off the sprinkler system in the gents, drenching him and delivering the best visual comedy moment of the night. Mimi, already suspicious at having to queue for hours outside the Maguire’s bathroom, finally discovers the truth when her war with Kelly escalates and Kelly decides she needs taking down a peg. If it was possible for Paddy to look any rougher, he makes a good effort when she confronts him with his gear.

Karen is increasingly narked by Joe’s treatment of Mandy, and decides to teach him a lesson in the football changing rooms. In true Shameless style, it turns into a sex education lesson, as the pair rip each other’s clothes off and are almost interrupted when Jamie comes looking for Joe, who’s late for the kick off.
