heroes building something or other.jpgBuilding 26? What’s that all about? Heroes (BBC Two, Monday, 9 March, 9pm) was once filled with dread and mysticism… shows called things like Angels and Demons and Fireball Monster Kapow… and now… Building 26? Where’s the fun in that? It’s gone from being a show about super powers and turmoil to something that sounds like a bloody container behind a retail park. Not just in title either. The show has completely lost momentum, verve and trickery to become something so pedestrian that it’s now resembling the boring tail-end of The X Files… all whispering and conspiracy.

The pace of the new Heroes is so appallingly slow that it felt like watching your nails grow. The characters are no longer engaging or relevant. They’re vehicles for things that seem to simply happen, as oppose to the characters shaping the story… being vital. Hiro has lost all the fun and humour he once had. He was one an all-fighting, giggling Pikachu, and now he’s more like a damp Sunday afternoon with nothing to do. HRG has had all his layers stripped away, leaving him a completely one-dimension, grimacing cabbage. Claire is just a moody little thing with a chip on her shoulder. Oh, and Sylar’s brooding. Loads. That’s about it.

Once upon a time, I could barely convey what had happened in a episode of Heroes. Those snaking twists and turns left me gagging for answers… fascinated by the relationship between each character and fizzing at the eye-sockets at the comic-book story-weight of it all. Now it’s simply there… just there… on my telly… making a lot of noise and saying very little indeed.

Last night’s story was basically this. Hiro and Ando nearly fell out with each other, while Tracy is being tortured. Claire threw a wobbler and HRG fell over drugged. Last night’s show bored me so much that even the Sylar bits didn’t thrill me. Even the segment that saw him getting shot at and the like… nothing. Didn’t feel a thing. The action is so dumb… so straightforward… so lacking in any emotional reason, that it left me totally not-fussed.

The only thing intriguing me in this series is ‘Will This Series Ever Pick Up And Get Good Again?’
