Trimble-gate trundles on: Did Corpus Christi field an ineligible player?

corpusmanchester.jpgThanks to Ms Gail Trimble and her ability to provoke one hell of a reaction, the last series of University Challenge has already claimed its place as one of the most high profile ever. But it doesn't stop there - oh no. Now the BBC have announced that they are investigating claims that one of Gail's team members, Sam Kay, wasn't actually a student at Cambridge for much of the series. Could the Corpus Christi team be stripped of their trophy?

University Challenge rules state that all contestants must be 'current students' while the competition is going on, and it's now being rumoured that Sam Kay - who sat on the far left - actually left education during the course of the competition and is now working as an accountant.

Now it's my opinion that this will all blow over rather quickly, as the Beeb will do what they can in order to avoid being put into the position where they have to take the trophy back. But on the other hand, the BBC do have to be seen to be whiter than white at the moment, so maybe, just maybe, it could happen.

While I'm here, can I just offer a random thought about Uni Challenge - does it infuriate any of you, as it does me, when Jeremy Paxman asks, incredulously, "How do you know that?" whenever a contestant correctly answers a question about popular culture between circa. 1950 and 1980. THE SAME WAY THEY KNOW ANYTHING THAT HAPPENED BEFORE THEY WERE BORN, FERCHRISSAKES!! I DON'T SEE YOU SNORTING WITH CONFUSION WHEN THEY KNOW ABOUT BOTTICELLI OR BEOWULF!!

That is all.
