Charlie Brooker gets new show on Channel 4… and I’m confused.

_44565884_brooker1_226.jpgI’m a big fan of Charlie Brooker. Most people I know are fans on some level. There’s probably people who don’t ‘get’ him too. As such, lines have been drawn in the sand leaving both sides shouting at each other like angry strays. Meanwhile, I just watch his shows and like them… and he’s got a new one (another already?!) coming out soon. He’s to write and present a new Channel 4 series in which he and a guest will dissect the week’s television output. It will be called You Have Been Watching, and I’m praying that it’s nothing like TV Heaven, Telly Hell or whatever it’s called.

One of the things I’ve always liked about Brooker is that he’s managed to lie somewhere between the worlds of telly and the press and pour equal bile on each. His clear awkwardness makes him the perfect fly on the wall of the unreachable for proles like us. Somehow, he sneaked in and told us all about the horrible things that went on… as well as envisioning a bleak future of telly through the trends spotted. Whether he was right or not wasn’t important… he made for entertaining reading and viewing.

The shows he’s been making have been a perfect extension of what he’s been writing all this time. It was easy to fall into TV Charlie after reading Writing Charlie. However, something weird is happening around him

In this new show, we’ll see “a brilliant hybrid of comedy quiz show and TV review programme,” said the Zeppotron managing director, Annabel Jones. “Charlie has shouted his views on television from the loneliness of his sofa for many years and now it’s time for others to try to get a word in edgeways. Charlie will be joined by a funny and thoughtful lineup to give TV the beating it deserves.”

Hangonaminute! That’s someone who works in TV asking for TV to be given a beating? So will Brooker be allowed to slag off Zeppotron, the company he part owns or whatever? It’s a bit of a mind melter. Let’s hope he does… a bit like the jabs delivered Fox-ward from The Simpsons.

It’s obvious that TV spods are making a star of Brooker (or aiming to at least) and I sincerely hope that this show is better than it’s being teed up at the moment. Essentially, what I’m seeing is a show with the same old guests being lined up to spout off… notably, Marcus Smugstocke, Johnny Vegas, Jimmy f****** sh***** c*** face Carr and the like. I hope that he gets some people on the show that are actually worth listening to. I hope this isn’t a backslapping fest… for now, I’ll be sure that it isn’t. I’m hoping he’ll get Graham Linehan on the show or something.

PS: Please note, this isn’t a backlash.
