Thumbnail image for tweedledumandtweedledeesian.jpgIt’s ten to eight, I’ve got my cup of tea ready, I’m ignoring Eastenders and I’m getting ready for the best reality cooking show since… well last year’s Masterchef. In the running we’ve got Mat – my firm favourite. He’s not very good at making things pretty but is big on flavour. There’s Christopher, who has less experience than the others and his food is never seasoned. And then there’s comeback king Andy who isn’t very good at getting things out on time. Who will win the coveted Masterchef title? Ladies and gents, let’s BLOG!

For all our Masterchef news and reviews, go here.

9.00 – And that’s it from me. Blogging this from start to finish means I’m starving. Watching all that yummy food has been fun though. It’s been a great show, and I’d happily eat in Mat’s restaurant. Kinda sad it’s over now. I’m not really sure what I’ll do at 8.30 every evening now. Go to the pub maybe.

What did you think of the winner? Let me know in the comments.

8.58 – He’s crying. His wife is on the phone and she’s crying. He looks so happy. I have goosebumps. His trophy is going on the shelf in his restaurant. A worthy winner.

8.55 – And the winner of 2009 Masterchef is… Mat! MAT! Yay! I’ll be honest, I cheered out loud. I’m dead chuffed for the bloke.

8.53 “it’s unfortunate for Christopher he’s stuck in a kitchen with two such great cooks”. That’s nice. He’s not going to win is he?

8.51 – They like Christopher. Really like him. And he’s good. But they’re loving Mat right now. I hate that they don’t talk about the rest of the series or the other tasks when they make the final decision. Everything should come into play. But Andy truly understands flavours. And gross moment of the night: On Andy’s dessert, Gregg Wallace saying “I would have happily bathed in it”. Cheers for that image, Gregg. That’ll stick with me.

8.48 – Andy’s up with his crab salad. Oooh, they like this one too. But come on guys, it’s just a salad. His dug main looks a bit sloppy too. Duck is a bit undercooked. But John still says it’s inspiring. What do I know? Gregg likes his flavour combinations. Is he on a contract to say that ten times an episode? They like his sundae as well. But he put it in a cheap glass. They’re not wrong – it looks like something you’d get in a Harvester. Even if it’s a “thing of absolute joy”.

8.45 – Mat’s started is “unbelievably extraordinary” apparently. But his main has got John’s heart thumping. Yay! He’s being “true to the crab” apparently. his pudding looks yummy. Good flavour, good textures. “Inspired” says John. “Most stunning plates of food I have seen for a long long time” says Gregg. If this guy doesn’t win I’ll be mighty annoyed.

8.42 – Christopher up first. His ravioli just gave Gregg a big kiss apparently. I think that’s a good thing. His main looks stunning. “Yummy” says Gregg. The pork needed slow cooking though. Awww, Christopher looks made up. The chocolate tart for dessert doesn’t look very nice really, but the guys seem impressed.

8.37 – They’re cooking their best three course meal. Here’s what they are:

Mat – Fillet of rabbit (I think), crab main course, Blackberry coulis and honeycomb mousse for pudding.

Christopher – scallop ravioli for starter, roast belly pork and clams (Gregg made sex noises at this one) and dark chocolate tart with creme fraiche.

Andy – Thai style crab salad for started, glazed duck and wontons for his main and a mango and passionfruit sundae dessert.

I’m actually preferring Christopher’s menu to be honest.

8.35 – “Who is going to really shine? Who is going to prove to us that they’re good enough to be a professional chef?” Who indeed. Get on with it! “Who wants it the most?” Asks Gregg. They all want to win. I predict them saying “I really really want this” at least three more times before I’m done. “May the best man win” says John. Quite right he is too.

8.32 – Ooh, they’re cooking for the chef who invented their desserts! Great final! Andy’s dessert has dry ice, or smoke, or something coming out of it. Looks pretty. Christopher mad mullet fillets, but it didn’t look as cool as to be honest. Mat had made beef tartare. Looks yummy. Mat gets a high five! And by the sounds of it, he might just get a job offer from the guy.

8.30 – Mat’s done a great job producing to Michelin standards. Michelin man is happy.

8.28 – Oyster Porridge!? That had better look nicer than it sounds. Christopher is tasting though! Yay! We might just have a fight on our hands.

8.26 – Ooh they’re off! Lunchtime! Andy is up first and doing a pretty good job with his presentation. Everyone in the kitchen is watching him. Bet that’s not making him nervous at all. But bless, he got a round of applause.

8.25 – Mat’s cooking skate and “hay baked celeriac” which frankly sounds crap. Looks alright though.

8.23 – He doesn’t want to be the person who is stressing and bumping into things. That’s good then. Christopher is cooking pancakes and oyster porridge, for a guy who has “held a Michelin star for longer than Christopher has been alive” according to Gregg. That’s about 25 years. Blimey.

8.22 – Andy is cooking tuna. I wish I was feeling it with him. I hope his food looks tasty and proves me wrong.

8.20 – Wow, the French dude Christopher is cooking with has three! three! Michelin stars, and the (still annoying) voiceover lady is warning that a Michelin judge could visit in secret at any time. I bet they don’t though.

8.19 – They’re off to cook in Michelin starred restaurants. Wowsers. That’s a big deal. They’ve all gone abroad too! Did they do that last year? How cool.

8.18 – Anyone else think the conversation bit is a bit redundant unless they’re kicking someone out?

8.15 – Andy has made sea bass and prawn bisque, it looks yummy and they love it. Chris made pasta, that went down well too. Mat is up with his venison – looks like a lot of flavours. But it looks like he’s onto a winner. Gregg loves it.

8.10 – They’ve started cooking! They’ve got guinea fowl, venison, sea bass prawns, lots of good stuff.

8.07 – Mat’s on a boat, playing about with some lobster. This shows his rustic style, you see? He’s still great though. Although one commenter last week did draw attention to his point eyebrows and now I can’t see anything else. Go team Mat! Anyone else? Go on, argue with me in the comments.

8.05 – Talking about the journey they’ve gone on. Andy is hoping to be the first comeback contestant to win and he’s “going to cook his socks off”. Christopher is getting a bit of a beating to be honest. But his food does look elegant.

8.00 – They’ve had a bit of a chat about how much they “really really want this” and the journey they’ve gone on. Yawn. Start cooking please!

I think as soon as they dissed his pork belly he was out of the running. No, actually – I think as soon as they said his starter was great (or whatever they said) but they didn’t have some sort of simulated orgasm over it, it was all over red rover for Christopher.

The kiwi deserved to win, but I was dreading the inevitable teary. Harden the f*** up, New Zealand. ;)

I’m delighted the Emperor Ming (from Flash Gordon)
won, and we all cheered when he was announced the winner ! Goodness only knows what he would have had his minions do to John and Greg if they hadn’t let him win !!!!!

I do agree that they should take the previous tasks from the earlier shows into account. It seems a bit pointless doing all the other challenges if it is only going to come down to the final round.

Was in Paris when the final took place and BBC programmes blocked in France. And it was my birthday and I wanted Mat to win from the first day I saw him on Masterchef. Came back home last night and switched computer on and watched the final. And whopped with joy. Wanted him to win because he was the man who wanted to cook to please others with his food and not for personal glory. Celebrated with a fine malt…what a guy!
