What’s worse than nearly drowning? How about nearly drowning on a TV show, in front of millions of people? Worse still, imagine Uri Gellar stood by, watching. Well, this actually happened to a woman called Amila, a 26 year old who took part in a show called The Next Uri Geller. So what on earth happened? Was she trying to recreate that Radiohead video? Was she taking part in some nightmarish initiation process? Thankfully not…
The title The Next Uri Gellar implies that the TV show is looking for a new person who can pretend to use psychic forces (I’ve seen Uri fail on too many occasions to believe otherwise… including a spectacular fail on the pitch at Exeter City, stood beside Michael Jackson), but in reality, it’s looking for someone who actually has psychic powers.
To make the whole ‘prove it then’ more interesting, her challenge was to guess a four-digit code, which would release her from a tank filling with water. Sadly, she wasn’t for guessing it and had to be rescued by assistants with bolt cutters after 25 seconds underwater.
“Luckily somehow I had this instinct to shout out: ‘Get her out of there quickly’,” Geller told The Sun. “It was a horrifying drama.”
So she won’t be doing it again?
“I am afraid that if she doesn’t do it again she might have a major phobia of this performance,” said Uri. “People expected me to give her a very negative verdict, but I didn’t. I was very impressed by her confidence and her courage.” And so, she went through to the next round to do it all again.
