I've had a bit of an American TV burst this week, so I was jumping with joy at this "look back/ look forward" show all about Beverley Hills: 90210. In case you didn't know, they're bringing the show back with a brand new young pretty cast! Hooray!
The E4 show "90210: That was then, this is now" looked at both the old show and gave us a sneak peak at the new one. But everything was actually a bit of a mish-mash. Instead of getting me excited about the new cast, it did the opposite. It made me want to watch the old show instead.
Youth being on my side, I didn't really 'get' the show first time around when I was a kid. I think I was about three years to young for it to really make an impact on me. I just thought it was strange that they all looked ridiculous and Shannen Doherty's left eye is slightly higher than the other one. Did that creep anyone else out?
But, I'm a sucker for a glossy American show so I was excited by another bunch of pretty people worrying about pointless things. This show managed to make the cast of yesteryear seem fabulous, but in comparison the new cast looked dull and uninspiring. Luckily, a couple of the cast members are coming back. Kelly will be there, as a guidance counsellor no less. And the wonky eyed one makes a return as well. Although hopefully without the Playboy centrefold.
This tougue-in-cheek look at the show was nothing to shout about, a great way to fill an hour with clips, but if it was meant to have me hankering for the new show, it didn't. I think most people would be much happier if E4 showed repeats of the original. After all, Luke Perry in high-waisted jeans and his t-shirt tucked will always by much more interesting than pretty newbies who are too young for any issues of their own.
Beverley Hills: 90210 will start next Wednesday. I'll be watching.

Woah, is this show online anywhere? We've had the new 90210 on-air since September but this flashback/new cast thing never aired for us!
