All the Young Dudes: Pop and Fashion (BBC Four, Thursday, 15 January, 9pm) looks to highlight the relationship between pop music and fashion. Of course, we all know that the two are virtually inseparable (you’d have to be a complete dolt not to know that), but it’s always fun to look at the parallels and remind ourselves of the terrible clothes we wore (as a country, as a youth, whatever) to show allegiance to a band.

For example, have you noticed the penchant for wearing pointy woolly hats at the minute, with one of the ‘ears’ stuck up? That’s because of pop-music, with some band called N-Dubz (or something) doing it. People may laugh when they see these kids slouching around looking like dogs that have just heard “walkies!”… but is it any worse than those of you who decked yourself out in tartan and half mast kecks because you loved The Bay City Rollers so much?
Throughout history, we’ve all made our identities based on record sleeves and the bands we like. The teddy-boys got quiff-tips from Gene Vincent, the world went mad for Beatle-boots, the kids daubed glitter on their faces for Bowie and Doc Marten’s got many-a-sale thanks to punk and 2tone. Face it. We’re all slaves to the rhythm.
Of course, this being a pop-culture show, it will be riddled with pointless directorial trickery and wonky camera work, but underneath all that is an interesting little film that has a lot of nice images to look at and a good soundtrack. Surely that’s what pop-culture is all about?
