It must be close right? If Channel 4 has launched a website to whip up some hype surrounding its eagerly anticipated Red Riding trilogy, it must be fairly imminent. Nineteen Seventy-Four, Nineteen Seventy-Seven and Nineteen Eighty are based are based on David Peace’s quartet of novels, which chronicle the investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper murders. But this is no ordinary true crime story of cat-and-mouse. No, this is a story of police corruption, nervous breakdown, obsession, death, murder, prostitution and relentless grime on the streets of the North. It’s not going to be a barrel of laughs, but it could turn out to be the landmark drama series of 2009. I’m currently getting stuck into book three of the quartet, and the first two have been sensational and I can’t wait to see how C4 will shoehorn four books into three feature-length films. What’s more, across these three films some of this country’s finest acting talent will be seen in action: David Morrisey, Paddy Considine, Maxine Peake, Peter Mullan, Lesley Sharp, Warren Clarke, Sean Bean… and so it continues. So you want to see the website, and a little trailer? Go here.
