Last of the Summer Wine star Kathy Staff has died aged 80. As Nora Batty, Staff will be remembered for her razor sharp tongue and wrinkled tights. Her run-ins with Compo lit up many a drab Sunday afternoon. However, there was more to Staff than a grumpy old woman in a Yorkshire town. Staff also appeared in Crossroads, Coronation Street, Emmerdale Farm and Open All Hours. She died after an illness, the BBC reported.
Staff played Batty from the first episode of Last of the Summer Wine in 1973 and appeared in 243 episodes. Usually, Nora was embroiled in various spats with Campo, who was desperate to see the legs that were under those famous stockings.
Her death means Peter Sallis is one of the only original Summer Wine cast members left alive. Sallis, who played Norman Clegg, said: “I’m terribly upset that she’s not with us, and I don’t know quite for sure whether we are going to do any more but if we do, she is going to be terribly missed.”
As a strange and comical tribute to one of TV’s most iconic women, here’s her moment on vinyl, when she sang with Bill Owen (Compo) on the comedy track, ‘Nora Batty’s Stockings’.
