Do I really need to tell you what happened in last night’s results show? You’ll have seen it in the papers… or on the news. Or maybe your mother-in-law rang to say she was so upset about it, she’d likely have trouble sleeping. (Or maybe that was just mine.)
So, okay, John Sergeant is still in and Cherie Lunghi is out. And, no, on the basis of dance talent, John should have gone out, but it’s not just about dancing, is it?
Every season, the BBC have picked someone older or overweight or clearly dance-challenged in some other way. I’ve said it elsewhere on this site, but if they didn’t want the public to vote for bad dancers, they shouldn’t have invited bad dancers to be on the show.
Yes, it pains me to say it, but he has as much right to be there as everyone else. Many viewers enjoy the early stages when the celebrities can’t dance and show themselves up, but you can’t then decide there is a point when enough is enough and they have to go. We have to take the rough with the smooth.
Of course, that’s easy for me to say since no-one has yet gone out (at John’s expense) that I was all that bothered to see go. If Lisa Snowdon had gone last night, I might have been ranting about the injustice of it all, but I hope I wouldn’t.
What I *do* hope is that John has been apologetic to Rachel Stevens last week and Lisa Snowdon this. Clearly the show means an awful lot more to them than it does to him. It is a bit galling to see them so upset, while John stands there with that slightly smug smile.
Anyway, on the upside, I really enjoyed the Bruce Forsyth/Anton du Beke performance. Why the BBC would consider anyone else at all as Brucie’s replacement (you know, if he ever leaves) I just don’t know. Anton is Bruce 2.0!!

Grrrrrrrr! He should GO! He cannot dance! It is a dance show! A dance competition where the judges and PUBLIC should vote for the best DANCERS. I was reafy to flip the telly into the garden last night if Lisa had gone. Grrrrrrr…..!
I don’t disagree… But you can’t *force* the public to vote for the best dancers. All this talk of John stepping down, etc., is just madness. He was invited to take part. It’s not his fault the public wants to keep him in, is it.
Ugh, I thought the Brucie/Anton thing was cringeworthy and embarrassing for all concerned (especially the viewers). I’m just going to have to mute Bruce at all times from now on…
As for John, I think he’s become quite arrogant about the whole thing – on ITT today he suggested that people who wanted to see an entertaining show could vote for him, but those who you know, just wanted to see *dancing* could vote for other people… The fab dancing IS the entertaining bit! Argh.
And Keris, I think you’re (a small) part of the problem – didn’t you say you voted for Lisa out of pity? That’s how people like Rachel end up in the bottom two (when that reasoning is applied to John).
Finally. (!) I’m sad to see Cherie go. I could have done wihtout Jodie or Christine and really not minded either way but Cherie’s done some fab dances. Sigh. x
No! Usually I can’t stand Brucie, as you know, but I loved it. I watched it (twice) with a soppy smile on my face… maybe it’s hormones…
No, I didn’t exactly vote for Lisa out of pity. I loved her dance and had already thought about voting for it, but it was the fact that I thought she might end up in the bottom two that made me actually pick up the phone and do it.
It’s Cherie as a personality I won’t miss. I have enjoyed some of her dances, but I don’t think she’s come over very well. Rather arrogant and aloof, I thought. And did you notice the others weren’t exactly rushing to comfort her at the end.
And finally (!), the next two I wouldn’t mind losing would be Jodie and Christine too. Well, assuming that Chambers is going to stay in until fairly late on. Pah.
MUCH AS I LOVE JOHN HE REALY DOES HAVE TO GO. LETS GET THE DANCING AS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.
Reminds me of the situation with Chico Slimani on X Factor a few years back, with everyone (me included, ISTR) growling that it was a SINGING show and he couldn’t SING goddammit!! But in the end, it’s more than a show. It’s entertainment. Chico was entertaining, in his way. His fans thought he was the dogs. And the same, in his own way, is true of John Sergeant. In the end, if you allow a decision to be made on the basis of a public vote, you’re at the mercy of their foibles. Or, as has happened at least twice on American Idol, their “vote for the worst” campaigns. Moan all you like, it’s the nature of the beast.
But you didn’t vote for Rachel!
Good job I did, twice (unless they only count votes from the same number once, but I doubt it’s that sophisticated at the BBC… they’re probably using an abacus to count them or something) and I don’t think Lisa’s dance was that good (although much better in the dance-off). Although for some reason, I was filled with a last-minute longing for her to stay – maybe cos she really makes an effort, or seems so nice, I don’t know.
Jodie said that Cherie was a lovely person, and as someone who is naturally shy and has been thought of as aloof (me! imagine!), I just wonder if maybe she’s not an extrovert. I liked her chemistry with James (she made me like him for the first time!) and I’ll miss her in the ballroom rounds. But I wouldn’t want her in the final, so I guess she had to go sometime…
And it had to be hormones with the Brucie thing!
(Did you see how he introduced Tom Jones btw? “Someone I’ve worked with many times…” Yes, that’s the main thing! LOL.) x
But I DID vote for Rachel, of course I did!
I liked Cherie’s chemistry with James too, but, like you say, I’m (relatively) happy to spare anyone I don’t want to see in the final.
And the Bruce/Anton thing was the only Brucie bit I could bear. Had to forward through the Tom Jones bit. And how long did that ‘watching TV by numbers’ joke go on for?! They could’ve fitted another dance in!
Oh, you didn’t make that clear! That’s okay then
Oh god, that TV by numbers bit… groan.
I know you’re right John, and it is the nature of how the show is set up, but I could at least see why Chico might have been considered entertaining, cringe-worthy as I found him… John doesn’t seem to even be making an effort, and I fail to see how he’s entertaining in the slightest. I consider it my civic duty to moan about him (or it lowers my blood pressure, at least)
Sorry Brucie…… Good idea on the Len 7. joke. “THE SEVERN” does NOT flow through Bristol.. It is the River Frome.. Geography is not your best subject.+
