TV Review: Strictly Come Dancing Results Show, BBC One, Sunday 9 November, 8.15pm

446x251-heather2.jpgThere’s only one thing to say about last night’s results show, isn’t there? Okay, maybe two. Or three. But the main one is that John Sergeant is still in and Heather Small is out.

It’s not the worst result I could have imagined. I mean – it’s not a travesty of Penny Lancaster, Gabby Logan proportions – but it is ridiculous. Yes, John is highly entertaining, but at this stage in the competition, entertaining isn’t enough. The man can’t dance. Having said that, if someone other than John had to go, I do think it was right that it was Heather.

I predicted in my review of Saturday’s show that it would be Heather and Jodie Kidd in the bottom two. In that circumstance, I would have wanted Heather to go (on the basis of overall performance), but since the judges have to judge solely on the dance-off, it would have been Jodie for the old Spanish archer. And, in my opinion, that would have been wrong.

So once I realised Jodie was safe and that Rachel was in the bottom two, I knew that it would be Heather to go home and I was okay with that. I do think it’s a shame that Rachel, who was clearly terribly upset, has had to suffer the bottom two after doing such a gorgeous dance and I hope it doesn’t rock her confidence too much.

But really, people, John has got to go next. He’s got to.

  1. Diane says:

I was thinking about Jodie’s dance and I think she did a pretty good job. It wasn’t *great* but if she’d been having dance lessons in any other capacity, and reached that standard in less than a week, everyone would have been impressed – Strictly judges have a bit of a warped view sometimes.

Anyway! At this point I’m not finding John at all entertaining – it’s just embarrassing to watch. I thought Heather danced really well, but I didn’t really care that much for some reason… SO wrong that Rachel was in the bottom 2, and has made me realise I must start voting, as she was one of my faves! x

  2. Keris Stainton says:

I agree about Jodie. As for John, I always expect to find him embarrassing, but then find myself laughing out loud – it was the twisting bit that did it for me this week. I need to start voting too, because, if I had, I would have voted for Rachel.

  3. Patrick Cronin says:

If John has any sense of fair play, he should resign from the contest, otherwise the programme will become a farce.

  4. Enid Pennington says:

I think John is an embarrassment and he should resign for the sake of the other contestants.
Whoever nominated him in the first place needs their head examining. His reputation is also damaged. For your own sake John – PLEASE GO

I watch the programme for the dancing content and switch off when John comes on. What a farce!

  5. Mary says:

I can’t believe that people keep voting for John Sargent. He is a charming man, and I understand his personal popularity, but this is a dance competition.. in spite of what he himself says, and his performances become more farcical week by week.
This isn’t ageism, I am 77 myself, but even at my age, and with two hip replacements, I could make a lot better show than he does!
PLEASE PLEASE, Mr and Mrs Public, show some common sense so this is a competition for GOOD dancers.

  6. George Stathakis says:

As long as the judges make supercilious comments about John’s dancing he will get support from many who identify with an ordinary dancer trying his best. Is it so difficult for them to say “we know you are trying, but sorry John, it is not good enough”, instead of snide remarks? By making him the underdog they are ensuring he keeps going.

  7. Keris Stainton says:

The thing is (and I’ve only just realised this… I must be mellowing), if the dancing is the most important thing, John Sergeant should never have been invited on in the first place. But he was.

This goes for other “challenged” contestants in previous series. They are invited on to the show by the BBC, who are then in no position to complain (by which I mean the judges) when the public votes to keep them there!
