Yesterday, I gave you the opportunity to have a good old look at Nadine Velasquez, the star of the very fine and funny My Name Is Earl. That was just a mere visual taster, as now we have the main course. Or something. Don't want to confuse metaphors or naffing. Nadine, who plays stripper/cleaner Catalina in the show, was flown over by aeroplane to the United British Isles to promote the release of a DVD. It's out now in all good DVD stores to buy for around £34.99 and spans four discs - the entire series three and loads of deleted scenes and cast interviews. So let's get going... this is what happened when I was holed up in posh hotel room, on couch with the attractive Nadine Velasquez (fear not, she later called the police to unhole the room and escort me from the premises).

For all our My Name Is Earl news and reviews go here.

Now, I have to explain. I bought a copy of Rolling Stone to read in the 'lobby' while I was waiting for the interview. The issue featured a lots of comedy, and one rude joke made me chuckle so I thought I'd use that as an opening gambit. I know that you're wincing at the very thought, and, yes, it didn't go as well as expected. So...

TV Scoop: [Rude joke... email me if you want to hear it, it's quite funny in a rude sort of way]...
Nadine Valesquez
: Eeeurggh! Hahaha! Eeeurgh! [looks around to her PR team who pull a 'who is this weird guy?' look].

TVS: Now My Name Is Earl is a funny show, but I was wondering what made you laugh... Are you a joke kind of person or are you a funny situation kind of person?
NV:
Both. But I am more of a situation kind of person. If I can get a good visual that's what makes me laugh.

TVS: OK, erm, let's talk about My Name Is Earl. Series three was a bit insane, wasn't it? It had prisons and all sorts. Tell us about series three...
NV:
I have to say that season four is not like season three at all, but you guys don't have that yet right? That'll be next year's conversation! I think that what season three.. I think the idea was to keep continuous storylines going, and it was pretty nutty. Greg Garcia (the writer) wanted to put Earl in different situations, and it does work because we have the help of the community, the Camdenites, and he still has his list. But there was a lot more going on, what with the jail and the coma.

TVS: And there's a love octagon going on in there as well...
NV:
Right!

TVS: Should love an geometry mix, do you think?
NV:
If you love geometry, sure.

TVS: What's your favourite shape?
NV:
A triangle.

TVS: And what about Catalina in this series? We get to see where she comes from and why she comes into America, right?
NV:
Right.

TVS: And, erm, what was Catalina's journey like?
NV:
I mean Catalina is always the friend that's a little bit kooky. She has good advice, but also a little mysterious. She's never really surprised by anything, and it took me a little while to figure out what the mindset was for Catalina. But it is a person who doesn't have too many judgements. She's sassy and knows what's going on in this crazy world.

TVS: Yeah, we like Catalina in our household because she says really funny, random things all the time...
NV:
Yeah, she's a cool chick. I'm similar to her with the random thing.

TVS: I was going to ask you whether you two were alike. How does your randomness manifest itself?
NV:
Umm. I don't know. I guess I just say stuff all the time.

TVS: It wouldn't be random if you knew what you were going to say. That was actually a silly question. I'll move on...
NV:
Hahaha!

TVS: Now, in this series Catalina tries her hand at becoming a 'chapstick lesbian'. I'mnot sure what a chapstick lesbian is...
NV:
That's one of the randomness things about her... she just came up with that. Hahaha! She couldn't remember or care to ask whether it was lipstick or chapstick. Whatever stick with her she goes with. That's how I am, that's how I'm random - I'll come up with my own words.

TVS: I think the seduction scene with you and Alyssa Milano was one of the funniest things in the whole series...
NV:
Really?!

TVS: Yeah, it me laugh out loud.
NV:
I actually think that it could have been funnier. I was so nervous.

TVS: Catalina is a very sexy character, but...
NV:
We never see it! Other than having sex with Randy, but that was gross. She's an attractive girl, she needs to get laid. She needs a boyfriend. And not Paco. I guess Nadine the actress needs to make out with someone.

TVS: So what you're saying is that you need some action onscreen?
NV:
Right! Right. But Catalina is a perfect character and I love what's happening to her. She just needs to... you know.

TVS: But were you really nervous in that scene with Alyssa? You do Maxim and sexy mags and stuff... and that scene made you nervous?
NV:
Well, I grew up watching Alyssa and I really like her as a person. I really got a long with her well. She's a cool chick. It was just strange to lick her. See, she soft and pretty... I think I was nervous because I liked it.

TVS: OK, so I have some more random questions, if my previous questions weren't random enough. Would you star in Woman Of A Thousand Tears Yourself?
NV:
Yes.

TVS: You would? Do you like those South American telenovellas?
NV:
I would love to be a guest on a telenovella. If you're Hispanic that's the ultimate. They're huge, I would love to be dramatic like that. They remind me of the films that Elizabeth Taylor and Katherine Hepburn used to star in. They were so DRAMATIC! I want a man to throw me down by the hair, and fall down and cry and chase him with a gun saying, "I loved you, I loved you! You bastard!" And then I he takes the gun from me and holds me. That's the kind of passion that I have. If I pulled a gun on somebody they would probably call the police, but that, in the telenovella, is an act of love. You can do that.

TVS: What do you prefer - Little Earl or Big Earl.
NV:
That was funny! Big Earl.

TVS: OK, let's talk about Big Earl. I've been a big fan of Jason Lee since his skate videos and Kevin Smith stuff. What's it like to work with him?
NV:
He's full of life and a little bit unpredictable. It makes things fun. He's such a great actor, and he helps me out too. Not just on Earl stuff but if I'm going for an audition. He's just very helpful, and talented. He's a people guy, but he also knows himself and his boundaries. If he doesn't feel like talking you'll know about it.

TVS: You wear the most extraordinary outfits in this show...
NV
: I think the crew likes it!

TVS: Is that fun though... I saw you in a nun's outfit last night and then something else and something else. You have more costume changes than a Madonna concert!
NV:
[sighs] Yeah, I'm up there with Madonna. I have a good life, I have a fun life. Everything I've done in the past five years has been great.

TVS: And before that, you had a tough life didn't you? You left school at 14, drove to LA when you were 16 on a whim...
NV:
I really did have an amazing early life. I mean hard times early on as well, but I always think about it and wonder whether I'm going to go back there, to that space. History tends to repeat itself if you don't pay attention. Like I said, in the past five years I've had the most fun in my entire life. The fact that I can work and have fun at the same time, it's a dream come true. I'm really grateful. It tends to work out when I follow my gut.

TVS: Let's talk about karma very briefly. I read in the newspaper today that Sharon Stone said something about people who died in an earthquake... that was all to do with karma.
NV:
Did she really say that?

TVS: According to the newspaper - a quality one I'll add - I read. It also said she was trying to give her child Botox in the feet.
NV:
Feet?! Why the feet?!

TVS: No idea. But what are you views on karma? Have you done anything wrong you want to atone for?
NV:
[thinks for a moment] Yes, there are many things every day.

TVS: Every day?! You do bad things every day?!
NV:
No, but you think about the bad things every day. I have a funny view on karma. I do think there is something in the idea of doing good things and good things happen. It's kind of a law of attraction. If you're operating on a level where everything is negative, that negative feeling will follow you around. If you change your mind and want to do good things, you open yourself up to good things. That's what Greg Garcia does so well - he takes a subject so large and so serious, and makes it funny while at the same time making people think about their own lives. If you have a choice, everyone will want to make their lives better.
