It's been a while, but Peter Kay is finally back with Peter Kay's Britain's Got the Pop Factor and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice this Sunday (10 October, 8pm). Having watched Peter on various stand-up DVDs and chatshow appearances, I know he loves a bit of singing and reality TV so I'm not surprised he's basing his TV comeback in the world of the TV talent contest. And, despite the preposterous title of the show, I'm pretty certain this won't be a merciless mickey take - it'll be funny and quite a gentle satire. Whatever it is it'll be long. There's an hour and a half for the first bit, then a Peter Kay documentary and then a Peter Kay's Britain's Got the Pop Factor and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice results show. A whole night of Peter Kay then! To get you in the mood I've pulled together some behind-the-scenes photos. Click on the image below to view them all!

I love peter kay and really was looking forward to watching this, however...... It was shit!! An absolute waste of time. Maybe Peter kay should stick to doing roary the racing car voiceovers!!!!!
The Irony is that on the 'real show' the bad acts are genuinely funny and cringe worthy and the judges reactions and stifled laughs are usually hilarious.
It probably would have been funnier if they had used actors hamming it up - instead of the actual ex judges....Just watch Kevin Bishop on Star Stories spoofing the entertainment biz.
This format was also spoofed brilliantly by Rowan Atkinson and Lenny Henry on comic relief back in 2001 when Popstars had just been aired. They should've left it there.
What a load of rubbish but I must confess and to be fair, it was so boring I turned over after 40 minutes, so I can't comment on the total programme.
From what I saw, totally unoriginal, unfunny and lame - and that's coming from a PK fan!
As a Peter Kay Fan, i'm sad to say that the bits I saw before my wife made me turn it over wasnt very funny.
It all looked very realistic, the stage , crowd, judges, infact i think this is what made it not funny by being too realistic. I agree the judges should have been actors rather than real people.
I didnt watch all of the program, so if the rest happened to be brilliant apologies... but i doubt it.
I love Peter Kay too and was really disapointed with the new show - it looked great in the pre-show ads. I thought I had missed an episode as I was expecting it to start with spoof audition rounds first but it seemed to go straight into the 'finals' - I was expecting it to be really funny and I'm sorry to say I only laughed a couple of times and kept praying that it would get better as it went on.
You're all mental, everyone I've spoken to was in stitches the whole way through. Yeah, it's been done before, but it was evident in watching that a hell of a lot of time, effort and research has been put into this - and it SHOWS.
Putting on an overly spoof reality show has been done a million times, and just looks cheap. I think Peter Kay is a genius, and even if I didn't like the show, just watching it it's plain to see the work that went into it, and that's respectable in itself.
I have to say this was the funniest programme I have seen in years and one of the best programmes of the year full stop. The humour was in places subtle, and very observational and the production values and attention to detail to make it look so much like the X factor were incredible. What would have been the point if it did not look exactly like the shows it was spoofing? The song routines were also hilarious, especially Geraldine (Kaye) going effortlessly from "Free Nelson Mandella" to "Eh, eh eh Um-brella".
My only regret is that "R Wayne" was voted off first- that lad is a star in the making. Hilarious where his grandmother ( R Nan) died when he returned home (cameras following as per X Factor) to the North East to tell his family he had not got past "boot camp" (he had been knocked out because he did not have a big enough sob story). The death of R Nan gave him the sob story he needed, and Pete Waterman turned up at the funeral "Kid- You're going to the finals!". Also loved R Wayne's songs, with the hilarious red Indian chief chanting at the beginning. Some of the other bands were very funny too- liked the midget group, Men to Boys.
All in all I think this will go down as a classic.
This is possibly the funniest one-off comedy I have ever seen. The characters who competed for the "top prize" were sheer comedy genius. But added to this were little snipets that - after a second watch were just as funny. Indeed Cat Deely may have been playing herself but her role as the presenter was most definately based on two other slightly tedious female presenters who's "stating the obvious" comments previously went unridiculed! And the infamous original trio of Pete, Nicky and Dr. Fox - well they set the trend didn't they.
Peter Kay - you are a living legend and will most definately go down in history as a comedy great.
P.S. Am I the only person who thinks Madame Tausades will very shortly have a wax work of Geraldine proudly displayed somewhere close to the Little Britain characters?
Yes, you could tell a lot of work went into this, far too much....I am sure it would have been much better if it had all been condensed into a one hour show. I actually stayed in to watch this on Sunday night, and I was ready to switch off after half an hour....very very disappointing, very predictable, not very funny at all. And yes, Nicky, you are the only person who thinks Madame Tausades will very shortly have a wax work of Geraldine proudly displayed somewhere close to the Little Britain characters!
The programme was fantastic. Paul McCartney was brilliant, but the bit when the man said he had brought the wrong f....ing dog was hilarious. Peter Kay is amazing, but my real admiration is for the wonderful Gary Barlow for the winners song. Please let Peter do another spoof on another reality programme, he does have a lot to choose from.
Actually Nicky isn't the only one.
I am amazed that some think it wasn't funny. Perhaps they missed the little comic touches such as the instruction to press the purple button on the remote and the small print just above stating that calls cost £1.50 per minute with 8p going to the crippled pole dancing charity. How is that not funny? Great stuff.
I cannot believe that people did not find this funny. I think the guy is a genius. I laughed almost non-stop throughout the whole thing. Tears were rolling down my face by the end.
Absolutely amazing. Keep writing stuff like this Mr. Kay. Wonderful
i loved it! not at first, it took me the first half hour to get used to the warm and not-so-cringeworthy look and feel of this, but then: marvelous! the bridges in the medleys! the dwarfs! the wheelies...! this was really one of the highlights of the year in comedy.
