BBC get it badly, badly wrong by cancelling 'Pulling'

pulling-gang.jpgSomeone at the BBC needs slapping senseless... that's if there's any sense there in the first place (as my mum says, "Where there's no sense, there's no feeling"). Why? Well, in light of the fact that Auntie is currently showing some of the worst shows I've ever seen (The Cup, the woeful Coming of Age), they've decided to nix one of the best shows I've seen in ages, in the shape of Pulling. Now, I'm extremely worried about the BBC's comedy output...

Pulling took some getting into, but when you did, it was one of the finest things on television. Catching late, I devoured the repeats and then, the second series and found myself eagerly awaiting the third. Of late, this has been a rare thing for a BBC comedy. Now, I'm facing a comedy black-hole and I don't like it one bit.

Instead of commissioning a third series, stupid stupid stupid BBC have decided to give the show a 60 minute special and then, to pull the plug. Why? It better be a bloody good reason, especially when you consider that the show is currently gaining interest in the US, with TV network ABC making an American pilot and the British version launching on the Sundance Channel later this month. Not to mention the BAFTA Award nomination a couple of years ago.

Maybe the writers don't fancy doing another one, and are ready to jack it in after two series, like The Office and Gavin and Stacey did? Nope. It's understood that the creators of the show, Sharon Horgan - who also stars in the series - and Dennis Kelly, wanted to write one further full series but were told 'no'.

Sources have claimed that the decision was because the show no longer fitted in with the target audience of BBC Three which is being focused at morons on a younger age group.

BBC Three controller, Danny Cohen told The Guardian that he decided to end the show in order to make room for new projects. "Pulling has had two fantastic series on BBC Three and we've committed to an hour-long finale episode as a mark of its quality. In an ideal world, we would recommission many more of our comedies - but on BBC Three we have to continually make room for the new. Every recommission means one less space for a new project."

However, insiders are criticising the (stupifying) decision. "It is disappointing," one source said. "The show nearly doubled its figures in the last series, but BBC Three is a different place to when the show first started." Another source added: "The Office and Gavin and Stacey ended after a couple of series because the writers wanted to pull it in its prime. That is understandable, but this is not that situation. The writers are completely convinced they can produce a better third series than the first two."

You have to wonder about this decision. I mean, all I want as a TV viewer is good shows. I don't care whether they're brand-spanking new ideas, as long as they're good ideas. If Pulling went on to make 10 series that were all great, then it's better than 10 half-baked new shows in its place. It's about quality, not quantity. People are quick to forget that Channel 4 nearly axed Peep Show after two runs, but changed their mind and are now reaping the rewards. All we can really hope for is that the finale for Pulling sees viewing figures going through the roof and the BBC will find another home for it, maybe on BBC Four or even midweek on BBC Two.

Either way, it's a shame that Auntie's idiotic reasoning will see the end of a wonderful show. If this means another series of Coming of Age or The Cup, then the BBC comedy department need to take a long look at their output. Rehashing Mock the Week or selling shows to Dave won't fend off the criticisms forever.

Completely agree with you.

I love 'Pulling,' it was a wee gem of a programme that grew and grew and grew.

I am looking forward to the special but it isn't the same as having a series.

Reconsider BBC!

Yeah totally agree. I just discovered pulling at the weekend when bbc3 showed all series 1 on sat and all series 2 on sun... Its the first bbc comedy to make me laugh in bloody ages. Most of the chaff they churn out these days seemed to be aimed at teenagers and seem to repeat the ideas things over and over again - like teletubbies.

I could not agree more. I've just found out about the cancellation and to say I'm staggered is an understatement.

I don't want to repeat the above article but when you compare the quality of this show with the rest of BBC threes comedy output (Clone FFS?!?!) it's like chalk and cheese.

I can only hope BBC2 pick this up as it really deserves to be brought to a much bigger audience.

Pulling is the best comedy series I've ever seen in my live since Peep Show. Shame on you bbc3 that you decided cancel such a wonderfull show. You should axe moronic ,,Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps''not brilliant Pulling!

I just purchased seasons 1 and 2, on a whim. This show is the best comedy in such a long time and the women are hysterical. I am a little ashamed to say that I have watched each episode at least three times but it is a good shame. Why does it have to end? Why? Does anyone know how to buy or view the Special?
