TV Review: The Restaurant, BBC Two, Wednesday 10 September, 8pm

the-restaurant-gang.jpgI'm already made-up that The Restaurant (BBC Two, Wednesday, 10 August, 8pm) is back on our screens. This classy show came back with a real bang. Now, bear in mind that one of the last things of note that we heard from the show was one half of winning couple Jeremy, pointing at the other half, Jane's stomach and saying "She got a thing growing inside her" (he meant 'a baby'), this show needed to win me over again (slightly). Thankfully, it delivered... and how!

Aside from Raymond Blanc, it was great to see Sarah Willingham on our screens again. She's the inspector who works alongside Raymond who is tough and no-nonsense, as well as being a secret crush of mine. Well, it was a secret until now. The team that Raymond has around him is always impressive, but not nearly as impressive as the man himself.

Monsieur Blanc, as ever, treads the fine line of sagely Uncle and complete git and, as usual, he pulls it off with aplomb. There's something about Raymond... a certain something he carries inside him... that makes me hold my breath every time he talks. I think they call it 'respect'. Of course, the respect is diluted through the screen, so you can imagine the churning insides and trembling underpants of the contestants when faced with The Man Himself.

Briefly touched on earlier, the last series ended with a twinge of personal disappointment (basically, I didn't want Jeremy and Jane to win) it was great to see the show return with vigour. Instead of the usual '...and here's the new contestants', the show chucked a whisk in the works and a rolling pin at the viewers and a whole oven at the participants.

They all rolled up cheerily to have Raymond basically say "Right you lot. You think you're all going to open a restaurant, but one of you isn't. Go and impress me. Now." It was a fine TV moment. This basically meant that the contestants had to go away and cook something for him and whoever didn't deliver got sent packing without so much as a sniff of some keys.

The contestants were, as expected, a varied bunch. There were some rather sweet couples, the down-to-earth Northern couple (who I'm already stupidly attached to emotionally), some middle-class pairings and two people that I already don't like and are probably going to win. They're called Alasdair and James, but I'm already referring to them as 'the arrogant gym f**kers'. This opening task thankfully took the wind out of people's sails and it was great to watch the bravado get stripped away with acerbic reviews of the food and a realisation that the task which lay ahead wasn't going to be easy at all. Of course, this is the reason why The Restaurant is so much fun to watch. With that, a lazy mango thing-in-a-cup saw Annette and Kashelle were booted off. It took three minutes to make and constituted tinned, mango, cream and a little bit of lime juice. No wonder they got booted off.

Fact is, this show is a very grown-up pleasure, a bit like olives or anchovies. I can't imagine there's too many teenagers fawning over it. However, with it's grown-upness, it exudes a certain class. Right down to the orchestrations that soundtrack it, right down to the detailing of camera work, edit and dialogue. Where most food shows are either super-friendly (Saturday Kitchen, Chinese Food Made Easy) or tacky (Cook Yourself Thin, Nigella Express), this is refined and potent. From the off, I was gobsmacked and enthralled... it looks like my concerns about the second series not being as good as the first were ill-founded... and I'm as pleased as anyone else!

I'm the Mike in BBC's The Restaurant this year with my daughter Harriet. Bloody hard work with some rewarding bits. While I can't say too much it is not as simple as it may seem on the TV. Alasdair and James are not arrogant - they are very funny; just keep watching. We have avoided mango (and spring lamb) since.

Hi Mike. Thanks for getting in touch. We're loving The Restaurant already, and fair play to you for having a go – cooking and running a restaurant under the glare of Monsieur Blanc must have been very tough indeed (not to mention a brilliant experience)!

can someone please tell me where sarah willingham got her diamond necklace oh great show wouldnt miss it

Have been watching The Restaurant for several weeks before realising that Mike was someone I had last seen at a mutual friend's wedding over 20 years ago!
despite the closure of your restaurant, well done to both of you for having the courage to compete!

Mike, you need to sort out your tetchy attitude. It wouldn't matter so much if you were competent at the same time as you were bickering with those around you, but you're about as useful as a marzipan dildo, old son! Give it up, please!

Love this show. Its very entertaining and educational. Thank you Mike for posting your comments about how it was on the show. It looks very hard and I still have no idea who will win. Every week, there's even more pressure put on these brave contestants. I thought your daughter, Harriet was quite passionate and had some real talent. Can't wait until next week.

I’m sorry but I think the restaurant is an appalling programme. I Work in the industry and am an admirer of Blanc but the ridiculous tasks that are set up have no relevance to actually running a concept establishment. The worst part is all the negative criticism of from the trio without any substantial positive feedback. Yes I know it is designed as an entertainment programme that is all about public humiliation but this really is a poor cousin of the apprentice.

Please can someone tell me where Sarah Willingham bought her beautiful necklace?

That necklace Sarah's wearing. Julia and Marie aren't the only two who want to know. Seems like the classy lady has excellent taste beyond the culinary realms...
I have friends in the jewellry trade who are working on the answer - if I find out, I'll post the answer.
... 'course we might get lucky - perhaps Sarah will spill the beans for us?....

Does anyone know where the lovely house is located that belonged to Mrs Spencer and her husband the judge? I think I know her from about 24 years ago in Witney !

Yes I am another person who loves that necklace that Sarah wears, I would love it for a christmas present I have already asked my husband to buy it for me, but he cannot find it, if anybody knows where to get one from please let me know, aswell as admiring Sarah's necklace I love The Restaurant!

Love watching the Restaurant, even got our 10 year old daughter Karris Hooked !! I LOVE Sarah's Necklace Too. Am waiting patiently for the answer, so i can put in on my santa list !!

Please, please can somebody put me out of my misery: what is the music which is played in the programme which also for some time now has been used in other documentaries and tv adverts - sounds like glockenspiels fading into classical synth sounds - a positive ID would make me very happy

thanks

Mike, I know what music you mean - I've been after this song for years. It's like the backing track of 'julia' from 1984 by eurythmics. It was played last night as soon as Stephen and Helen were told they were going home. I have been dreaming of this song for years and i finally recorded it from replaying the programme from the bbc website. i recorded it onto my phone and hope to put it on youtube to see if someone can help me with the name. Please - if you're out there and know the name - let us know Please!!

Hi,
I have also been looking for this piece of music for a long time and cannot find it anywhere either. I think it was also played on the apprentice!
Any help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks.

The necklace is from Tiffany I believe.

Raymond Blanc is good on this program.
Sarah Willingham is awful and vile.

Very disappointed with the winners. It seems that it is not about cooking skills.
