If watching a heavy debate about God doesn’t float your boat, then how about a fun-romp through the world of Jane Austen? Lost in Austen (ITV1, Wednesday, 3 September, 9pm) kicks off to enable us to have a peep into the world of ruffles, bounders and fillies without taking itself too seriously. Trick is, with this show, is that, instead of ‘faithfully’ recreating one of Austen’s literary works, the producers have decided to appeal to the Costume Drama audience with a bit of time-travel. It looks like a neat twist on a format that I can’t bear. So with this be worth it?

From the outset, it looks like this will be able to provide something for Doily-haters like me. This daft idea that someone can somehow get lost in one of their favourite books is one that kinda appeals to me. It’s a bit like Tron, only with a dandies and stately homes instead of a cyan and magenta death game.

The show stars Jemima Rooper as Amanda (the gal who gets ‘lost’ in Austen) who brings a certain something to everything she does (even when she played that spoilt girl in that teen soap on Channel 4 which I can’t remember the name of). I’m guessing that she’ll be a bit ‘quirky’ in this, but let’s be honest, this is an idea that needs someone to provide a pinch of salt to the proceedings. This may be sugary and flimsy, but I’ve got a feeling it might make for some really fun telly.
