So bad is BBC Three these days that the fantastic Dawn Porter has jumped ship to Channel 4 for her new series, which kicks off with Dawn Porter: Free Lover (Channel 4, Tuesday, 30 September, 10pm). Now we know Dawn is a game gal… but as she’s got naked in previous shows, we can only assume what risque business she’ll be getting up to in something dubbed ‘Free Lover’…
In my opinion, it’s pretty sad that most people look at Dawn Porter and dismiss her, by virtue of the fact she has fun and is, well, easy on the eye. However, in amongst all the fun and winking of her shows, she conveys something more potent than people may credit her for.
In the first episode of the new series, Dawn goes to peer into the world of polyamory… or ‘free love’ to you and me. Hang on… ‘peering’ is not something Dawn Porter is very good at. Charging in headlong and getting in way too deep and letting us enjoy the experience, quite possibly at her expense. There, that’s more like it. Thing is, Dawn wants to find out what it’s like to be in a relationship but still share partners.
She starts proceedings in San Diego to meet a husband and wife who run a free love school. Of course, this means Dawn experimenting and investigating, to see if there’s more sex than love going on in this circle. For those that fancy her, you’ll be thrilled to know that she ends up in the free-love hot-tub.
She then visits Germany to stay in a commune where free-love is the lifestyle choice. Scratching the surface, she’ll unearth a pit of fears, jealousy, abandonment… and meet the people who have come away from free-love scarred. I expect this to be engaging, insightful and… that long forgotten TV chestnut, fun!
