Who fancies a trip to the Amazon with Bruce Parry (BBC Two, Monday, 22 September, 9pm)? If you’re thinking ‘not really. I’ve had my share of posh blokes in remote places’, then think again. While Bruce is a well spoken chap, he’s also one of the friendliest faces on the box and, despite what I thought before having seen him, and stupidly made my mind up about something I knew nothing about, he makes some seriously interesting telly. This week, Bruce takes us through the Amazon, vomiting all the way. Jackass meets Attenborough?
Monday sees Parry meeting up with the Achuar tribe. Theses mad fellas have this morning pick-me-up drink called wayus that sees drinkers cleansing themselves with some impressive, Exorcist style puking. From some reason, they do this every morning.
Not only that, but these tribespeople live up to my expectations of any South American tribe by indulging in hallucinogens. Basically, they cane litres of ayahuasca brew which, yep, must be vomited. Then, weird and wonderful sights await. Naturally, Parry is game and joins in with all his might.
Thankfully, it’s not all psychedelic visions and heaving, as there’s a couple of football matches, a Brazilian carnival, cross-dressing and more. Well worth tuning in to.
