Merlin? I'm already tired of it...

Merlin4.jpgThis weekend sees the first episode of big-budgeted Merlin (BBC One, Saturday, 19 September, 7.30pm). Now, if you're looking for an article that's going to big up the brouhaha, then look elsewhere. You see, thanks to everyone being really rather excited by it, it's got me in a massive grump. Before the show has even taken its first breath, I'm already suffering from overkill. To me, it's already The New Robin Hood. A drama thing for all ages which is going to be a bit rubbish.

Thankfully, my grumbliness about Merlin doesn't actually take any skin from my sneering snout. I'm the last person who would tune into a show about magick and wizardry. I loathe Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and this looks like it's going to aim squarely for the middle ground. Young wizards and blokes with long white beards talking about noble quests and all that... switches me right off.

However, I know I'm in the minority on this one. The two likenesses I've chosen have been two of the biggest grossing flicks in years, and are loved by almost everyone. In fact, it feels like everyone loves stuff like this except me. Sadly, I can't get past the horrendous amounts of dicky CGI. It kinda makes me wanna puke.

So with a huge push to get bums on seats and eyeballs on screens, this show seems already like the Beeb has got a lot riding on it and as such, have pushed this down the throats of everyone to tell them how good it is. Sadly, I only need the briefest of looks at some wizard to know that this show will bore the seat of my trousers off. That said, I'm really looking forward to it starting so I don't have to sit through all this anticipation - it's killing me.
