Last night Kellie Moody was eliminated from Britain’s Missing Top Model. Deaf from birth, Kellie started the competition in red-hot form; winning some challenges and impressing the judges in her photo shoots. But the thorny question of whether being deaf represented an explicit visual disability was always hanging around, and Kellie was always fighting a battle against the other girls and the judges on this score. There was no animosity between her and the girls, and she seemed well liked, but last night her performance in a speaking television advert – and her declining standard in photos – meant that she was given the push. We managed to catch up with her, so have a look after the jump for what she’s got to say.
TV Scoop: There was a lot of hassles with Jess in episode four. What was your take on it all?
Kellie: I didn’t realise that Jess talked about her disabilities quite lot of times and part of me felt for her but also I wanted to tell her: “deal with it, and enjoy your life, experience what’s out there”. Life is too short. I understand what Sophie was trying to say but I think Sophie took it too far, to be honest. At the meal, I wanted to speak up and say something but I was not really sure what they were all saying until I watched the TV.
TVS: After all the arguments, are you glad to be out of it?
K: I was glad to be out of it because I am not that kind of person who argues and stuff. I don’t like to be involved with things like that. I think the girls took it too seriously. I just wanted to enjoy photo shoots, the catwalks and have a laughs with girls.
TVS: Let’s go back to the start… why did you put yourself up for this?
K: It was something I always wanted to do since I was little but I was too scared to give it a go. When I heard about this show, I thought maybe this is my chance. See what it would be like to be model. To feel good.
TVS: What was your experience like? What did you learn about yourself?
K: It was a very interesting experience and I never knew what it was like to be a model. People think that being a model is a very easy job but it isn’t really because it’s not just about photo shoots, it’s about catwalks, acting for adverts and communicating with various people. I really enjoyed the varied modeling jobs on the show but one thing I realised was that it was very hard for me to communicate on television. At the time I got upset thinking I couldn’t do it but I don’t think that way anymore. This made me want it more. I went to a clothes show in Birmingham a few years ago and somebody came over to me and gave me a business card for a modelling agency. At that time I thought, “no way, I can’t do it”, but I wanted to be strong and give this new experience a try. I have learnt so many things and now I’m happier and stronger than ever.
TVS: You and Lily got on well for obvious reasons, but was there anyone else you bonded with?
K: Yeah that’s right but I also like Kelly Knox, because she’s just herself all the time and that’s what I like about her. We laughed about lot of things like all the girls do – gossips, fashion, men etc.
TVS: What was your favourite moment?
K: Too many to say! If I had to choose I would say when all girls went out clubbing and enjoyed dance. That’s when we forgot about everything else.
