I was going to start this review by saying there was no point reviewing the first episode of the second series of Touch Me, I’m Karen Taylor because it was exactly the same as the last series, but then I discovered I didn’t review the last series. Damn.
So, okay, you might know Karen Taylor from The Sketch Show, which starred Lee Mack, Tim Vine and that bald guy. She’s (very) northern, (very) busty and, according to my husband “filthy”.
Touch Me… is a sketch show and I have mixed feelings about sketch shows. The Fast Show, obviously, is an utter classic, but I’ve never understood the appeal of Little Britain or Catherine Tate – the same gags, done in the same way, week after week? Surely it’s funny the first time, but then you’re just anticipating the line you know is coming.
Karen Taylor has more in common with Catherine Tate than The Fast Show, but I do think she has a certain charm that makes her more watchable (and I’m not talking about the “charms” that appeal to my husband). Actually, she does rely on her massive jugs for a lot of the humour and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that. I mean, I’m not wild about her using her sexuality for cheap gags, but the sketches in which she erroneously believes someone to be commenting on her bosoms and so gives them a load of abuse are usually the funniest in the show.
I don’t think there was anything new in this new series at all… There was “Cash cow”, which, while funny, is a take-off of those late night cable shows where you have to guess something utterly random (Question: “Things you might do”; Answers: “melting” and “hiding from the bailiffs” and “badger baiting”) to win, like, £50, so it’s not exactly cutting edge. There’s “mememespace” which is, obviously, MySpace and is occasionally funny, if obvious (last night it was a woman stoned out of her mind who turned out to be working for broadband support). There’s the woman in the office always telling her colleague inappropriate things like, when licking a biscuit, “I licked a turd once.” And there’s “Glamorama” – Panorama presented by glamour models (the idea’s enough, isn’t it; you don’t actually need to see the sketch).
There’s also the makeover woman, which is rubbish, and the sexually harassing school teacher, which just makes me feel uncomfortable (if it was a male teacher harrassing female students, it wouldn’t be allowed, would it?). Plus there’s the “dolly bird” married to a really, really old man, which is about as funny as it sounds.
In between sketches, Taylor addresses the camera ostensibly as herself and those bits, for me, work better than the actual sketches. I don’t know. It was a pleasant way to spend a half hour, but a comedy classic it is not.

I agree, it is a tired repetitive format. It’s a lolt of work to come up with original sketches each week, but that’s where artists should be heading if they want to succeed. Karen’s breast gags are really unfunny and dull.
