Of the many "guru" shows that litter the gogglebox like courts summonses on Pete Doherty's doormat, BBC Two's Mary Queen of Shops is one of the better ones. Mary Portas herself is engaging and watchable in a very Gordon Ramsay way - you like her even though you think you shouldn't - and the subject matter is genuinely interesting. At least that is the way it is most weeks, this week was a bit of a let down.

This week the BBC lured the viewers into the trap commonly known as a "Revisited". Channel 4 are keen on this, but the great Big Brother hosting behemoth is at least honest enough to tag the word on the end so we know what to expect. So what we basically had was 45 minutes of repeats from two shows from the last series, featuring interspersed talking heads from Mary, then 15 minutes of Mary actually going back to them at the end.

Boutique one is Ju-Ju is Brighton, a (supposedly) cutting edge boutique painted in zebra stripes and fronted by two clueless middle-aged people who are struggling to be down with the cool kids. Mary tells them to sort it and get some edgy labels in, the woman who owns it cries a lot and the man sulks. In the end they listen and it is a success. 12 months later they have rested on their laurels, leading Mary to scold them severely and then bring in a gang of surly fashion students to tell them where they are going wrong. They listen, which is more than I would have done. Frankly if my job involved having to listen to, and thus inflate the self-importance of, students I would either kill myself or kill them. The Ju-Ju owners have no such problems with their dignity, and they act accordingly and save the shop. Hooray!

Boutique two is Homeboy in delightful Doncaster, a couple-run unisex shop that has fallen on hard times. Mary turns up and tells them their shop is bland, and that all people in Donny are bothered about is looking like David and/or Victoria Beckham - nice. The lady in charge is up for it, the man sulks - they change and the relaunch is a success. Mary comes bac in 12 months to discover that they are doing very well, too well, as they have decided to open another shop for menswear alone. Cue Mary panic. But, as is always the way, the guru cannot be seen to fail and we leave with everything looking rosy.

An entertaining hour as usual, but shame on the BBC for screening what is basically a repeat with some additional commentary and trying to get away with it.
