I infuriate myself sometimes. Last night, I was all primed to watch Crime Scene Investigators and Bannatyne Takes On Big Tobacco. What did I end up watching? Bloody 10 Years Younger and Gordon Ramsay's F Word (Channel 4, Tuesday, 1 July, 9pm). Does this happen to anyone else? You set your mental alarm to remind you of a show you fancy and then, when it comes to the crunch, you find that you're brain turns to lazy slop and your body just gives up and you end up watching whatever channel you're on. As I like the Channel 4 News the best, I found that I've been watching more and more of the Schlock Slot on Four. So, what's Ramsay up to then?
The F Word is a very reliable programme indeed. It's not complicated or fussy... just fast paced cookery fluff. Recipes are rattled through and little asides are as 'challenging' as Ramsay's language. Of course, that means, if you're the sort of person who gets upset at the sound of swearing and constant "uh?" and "Yes?", then you'll probably weep at the sight of a piglet being cut in two or someone chewing a cooked eyeball. All of these things were present in last night's show.
Tom Parker Bowles (he must be related to Rod Hull surely?) cooked a whole pig and then, with the help of some very well bred people ya?, ate the whole lot. And I mean the whole lot. Including the arsehole. Yup. F Word went a little big Jackass for a moment... although, it's worth pointing out that Jackass would have eaten it raw as opposed to fishing it out of some offal broth. Still, an arsehole was eaten.
Of course, Ramsay doesn't give anyone too much camera time as he's the star... and jeez, what a needy one his is. Still, we all know that, so let's not pick the bones out of that. Ramsoid went shooting pigeons which, given his macho exterior, you would've thought he'd love. However, he looked rather nervous, which reminded me that for a chef, Ramsay has one of the most delicate stomachs I've ever witnessed. Almost weekly you can see Gordon spitting things out and trembling like a dog having a dump. If you challenged him to a fight, may I suggest shooting stout in his mouth from a water pistol... because he'd quite probably cry.
Anyway, there's not much that I can say about this show that I haven't written before. It's pretty entertaining, despite the fact that it tries way too hard.
