I understand that this is probably not the best way of doing this but, I’m dumping my girlfriend so I can take up fancying Ching-He Huang full time. Now, Ms. Ching-He Huang is the star of Chinese Food Made Easy (BBC Two, Monday, 7 July, 8.30pm) and she’s a brilliant person to have on the telly. First and foremost, she’s a fantastic cook and secondly, she’s a dreamboat. Man, I fully intend to look at the way this programme was assembled, how it works, how hungry it made me and all that usual TV review stuff… but I fear that it could quite easily slip into horrible fawning teen heart poundery. I’ll do my best not to swoon.
Before I start, I’m warning you that I won’t be featuring any of the recipes here. That’s not what a TV site should be looking at. So, if you’ve found this article whilst searching for (the obviously stunning) food cooked up in the show, I’ll advise that you click the blue bits of this sentence, and you’ll be whisked away to recipes and tips.
Anyway. Back to TV. As I’ve mentioned previously, the … Made Easy format, in its Indian food guise, didn’t work at all for me. It was too cold and sterile. Even though the food looked great, the show lacked all personality and felt a little grumpy and clunky. No such worries with this wonderful little show. Ching-He Huang, the minute she comes on screen, lights everything up with her firecracker personality and enthusiasm.
So great is she on screen is that, mercifully, the show dispenses with all the editing tricks, wonky camera angles and steaming rave music that usually blights UK cookery shows. Technically speaking, the lines of this show are clean and precise. There’s no need for that fatty, frilly nonsense as the whole show rattles along with good fun and excellent tips and stats.
Ching-He Huang showed us some truly wonderful ‘secrets’ of Chinese cooking… like “seasoning the wok”, something I’d never considered in all my days. She also told us of 5 things to have in our cupboards that are essential to Chinese cooking. Not only that, she was considerate enough to give us alternatives, should we be unable to get our hands on rice wines and the like. This, in short, was one of the best cookery shows I’ve ever seen. Not patronising but still covering the basics. Fun, without falling into desperation. Great to look at, thanks to the very pretty Ching-He Huang. And, most of all, completely inspiring. After viewing, I decided that I’m certainly making her Beef Oyster Sauce thing for my tea… she made it look easy to do because, get this, it IS easy to do. Watch this programme and watch your tastebuds throw a street party!
Sadly, if my girlfriend has read this, I’m afraid I’ll be cooking for one…
