Bonekickers eh? The most talked about show of the week, and not in a good way. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a worse reaction to a show ever. It’s been almost universally panned everywhere I’ve seen. Apart from me, who quite liked it. Before you scream at me, I must say I liked it in a fast food sort of way – no substance, stupid but entertaining. So sue me. Mind you, The Guardian reviewer said that it was curiously satisfying. So ner-ner-ner-ner-ner to you all. Episode two is even more stupid. But all this hoo-haa got me thinking - apart from Bonekickers, what has been the most panned TV shows ever? Have a look at what I’ve come up with.
1. Echo Beach/Moving Wallpaper.
Hopes were high, and so was the concept - have a show, Echo Beach, which was a soap, and then have a programme afterwards that was all about the making of it. It didn’t work, although Moving Wallpaper was marginally better. Edgy and postmodern? No, just dreadful. Click here to read one of our reviews.
“Echo Beach was awful. I switched off after the first half. The trouble is this: if you’ve just seen it being completely sent up, you can’t take any of it seriously. Oh, and also, it’s crap. I mean, even as soaps go, it’s rubbish. And the thing is, the sort of person who enjoys satirical, amusing programmes that take the piss out of media types (ie me) is not at all the same sort of person who enjoys really naff soaps. It won’t work, it won’t work, it won’t work.”
2. Rock Rivals
There were high hopes for this piece of uber-trash. It didn’t pan out and the show leaked viewers badly. Click here to see our review here.
“In the circumstances, it might seem a bit odd to suggest that Rock Rivals lacks bite. Yet, so far, it definitely hasn’t developed the crazed energy of Bad Girls or Footballers’ Wives. Of course, it could just be that, after its predecessors went over the top for so long, the law of diminishing returns has set in. On the other hand, you also get the impression that, for obvious reasons, ITV1 simply can’t bring itself to satirise talent shows with anything like enough vigour. Certainly the one here is treated mainly as an interesting, even quaint backdrop – leaving a large hole where the real meat of the drama should have been.”
3. The Palace
Our Katie loved this, but not many others did. Click here to read Katie’s eulogy.
“The Palace is the TV equivalent of balloon modelling. It feels like being shot to death with popcorn.”
4. Eldorado
Remember Eldorado from the early 1990s. It was trumpeted by the Beeb as the next big thing in soap land. It sank without trace very, very quickly.
5. Naked Jungle
Channel 5, as it was known back then, wanted viewers quickly (still does, to be honest) so it hired Keith Chegwin to host a naked gameshow in a jungle setting. It was weird. It wasn’t just the programme that got pilloried.
Can you think of any more shows in recent memory that have been absolutely nailed by the critics?

You forgot the magnificently so-bad-it’s-not-even-funny Heil Honey I’m Home.

Mind you, if you blinked, you would have missed it.
What about the embarrassment that was….That awful programme, whose name escapes me for now (and hopefully much, much longer). Starred Kris Marshall, about estate agents? Boy that was panned like crazy goats in my house!
