Excuse me, if you will, while I woohoo – WOOHOO! The reason for this Homer Simpson-esque outburst denoting excitement and joy? Well, Outnumbered‘s coming back! This sit-com about middle-class family life, which is gentle, warm, hilarious, touching and innovative all at the same time, provoked a huge amount of comments on TVScoop last autumn, not a single one of them, as I remember, negative. People really took this show to their hearts – but only the people who saw it. Now I know that sounds a bit obvious and silly, but the frankly ridiculous scheduling did mean that you could have easily missed it, even if you’re the sort of person who loves their TV comedy.
The 30 minute sit-com was put on after the BBC News, ie at 10.35pm, which is certainly not a prime spot for comedy, and it should be pointed out that the show contained no material whatsoever that would warrant a slot any later than 9pm. At least people would have known where they stood if the programme had been shown weekly, but instead it was shown on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday two weeks in a row. I don’t know what fed into this decision, or whether it was made with or without the consent of the programme-makers, but it certainly meant that a few people I know saw the first episode and then came back a week later to find that they had missed two servings of their new favourite show.
Anyway, let’s hope that these issues have been resolved, and that as many people as possible get the chance to see the second series of this wonderful show. Those who enjoyed it the first time round will be happy to know that everyone from the original cast returns, from Hugh Dennis, to Samantha Bond, to little Ramona Marquez and Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin have held onto writing, directing and producing duties.
I can’t leave you without offering a little clip, of course, so here’s a scene where the youngest child Karen decides she’s leaving home to move to Spain, or Greenland. Or Dorking.
