Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (a man whose name I consistently resent typing out in full) needs to be careful. I’m a big fan of his and I like his approach to life… whoever, I’m getting a bit sick of being preached to by famous foodies about… well… whatever is bugging them at any given moment. Of course, Hugh lives it like he tells it and it’s the other’s preaching that’s seeing my fatigue… but the fact remains, sometimes, I just wanna enjoy watching someone cook… so what’s the new River Cottage Spring (Channel 4, Wednesday, 4 June, 9pm) all about?
As usual, Hugh is converting a bunch of people. He’s obtained some land and is guiding some of the public through the trickiness of growing your own… and rearing your own. It’s all good fun and it’s kinda funny seeing people wretching at any type of vegetable. Of course, it’s not all about that. In the last show, we saw Hugh going back to his Chicken Out! campaign, which, seems to be working out just fine… and growing.
However, the main purpose of this show is to see what is seasonal, and how to cook what’s growing right now. Now, I could watch people carving and cooking meat all day long (seriously… just have a channel that has loads of nice look meat on it), so Hugh is a joy to watch buzzing around his kitchen… add to that, loads of asparagus and the like, and you get some seriously lovely segments. As ever, he’s always worth watching… just try and forgive him his little rants okay?
