Naysayers will of course be scoffing: "I told you so" at the news that Life On Mars USA has hit trouble long before its broadcast date. We've seen pictures and seen trailer and, to be honest, thought it looked ok. I mean, there's absolutely no point in comparing it to the original because emotional responses would be made, and the American version - like all good remakes - take the original concept and feel and appropriate it to a new set of situations. So, even though I loved the original, I was pretty chilled about the US version. With so many brilliant and iconic American cop shows from the 1970s it could lampoon, heck I was even looking forward to it. Sadly, it seems it's not exactly in the rudest of health.
I read in a news story yesterday that the pilot episode, based in LA, may not even make it to the screen. According to the story, execs have decided to tear it up and start again and move the series' location from west to east coast.
This actually makes sense, as the two main characters have been written as tough Irish American. Dublin-born Jason O'Mara and Colm Meaney (as Gene Hunt) play the lead roles, so, again, it makes more sense to base it NYC where there has, traditionally, been a huge Irish/American community. There's also the fact that the grittier NYC evokes the 1970s better than sun-dappled LA.
Matthew Graham, co-creator, was quoted as saying: "'It's been an incredibly convoluted journey. They took on a big job and there were different opinions on where to go. It's been a tortuous process... At the time we thought he (David E Kelley) took what we said on board, but I don't think he did in the end. I think they should go further away from us; otherwise the danger is you look like an imitation."
We'll just have to wait and see. Let's hope they pull it out of the bag.
