Okay, watch this advert…
…now it’s time for a big rant.
If you’ve seen this ad’ on the box… or just watched it right now… chances are, you just thought it was a silly advert playing around with the husband-and-wife format. It’s daft and throwaway. Right? Well, not if you’re one of the braindead idiots who have complained about it.
See, the Heinz mayonnaise advert has got itself 175 complaints thanks to the kiss between the two blokes involved. Viewers have contacted the Advertising Standards Authority claiming the commercial is “offensive”, “inappropriate” and “unsuitable to be seen by children”. Obviously, the full tongue action, the slight arousal in the trousers of one of the guys and the call to “slip it in” is pretty out-there… although, I have to admit, I made that up. It’s a quick peck. Nothing more, nothing less.
The ASA has yet to decide whether it will investigate the advert, which is scheduled to run for another month… can you believe that? I mean, it’s not like it’s going to corrupt the nation’s sponge-brains is it? Let’s just think about this for one second. How many cartoons have you seen where Bug Bunny gives Yosemite Sam a big smacker? How many risque jokes about Smither’s sexuality have you seen in The Simpsons? How many times have you wanted to smack people in the mouth for being backward do-gooding pen-hoverers?

Would be more, but my doctor advised me to stop watching Points of View or reading the local paper’s letters page.
On the flip-side though, I’m betting Heinz marketing people knew this would cause some people to complaint and kick up a fuss. Thus leading to you and everyone else reporting about it and giving them a massive amount of free publicity.
While I agree the advert itself is harmless I’m not so convinced of the motives behind the people that made it.
