Ah, May Bank Holiday. In our house, that means just one thing: the final of the Snooker World Championships on the Beeb. I should admit that I can watch pretty much any sport on TV and enjoy it, but I wouldn’t watch snooker at any other time of the year – it’s this particular tournament that’s special. Partly it’s down to the venue; the Crucible in Sheffield is wonderful as a theatre and wonderful as a sporting arena, too.
It creates such a buzz, and never more so than when there’s a maximum 147 break on the cards. You can hear the whispers rush around the theatre once a few reds and blacks have been potted, and the excitement just builds and builds. As always, the BBC is the best at showcasing this tournament – it has charismatic commentators (and John Virgo…) and fills the intervals with fun and interesting features.
This year, there have been two 147 breaks for the first time, completed by the eventual finalists Ali Carter and, surprise surprise, Ronnie O’Sullivan. Watch the latter float around the table as he achieves a 147 in under ten minutes.
