You may have noticed some Saul Bass-esque idents on BBC One recently, flagging up this new series of The Invisibles. It stars Anthony Head and Warren Clarke as two ex-master criminals who are brought out of retirement for one last heist. Well, it was never going to be one last heist was it, because it's a fully-fledged six-part series. So, two decent actors, a rip-roaring premise and loads of opportunity for some fun and edgy entertainment. Except it wasn't really that much fun and it wasn't very edgy.

Maurice (Head) and Syd (Clarke) are two ex-master criminals who, back in the day, used to be able to break into anywhere. They were called The Invisibles.

For past decade or more, Maurice and Syd have been living on the Costa Wherever, but have come back home to put their feet up and (in Maurice's case) placate their families. Maurice hates being back in a nice and pleasant English seaside town, with nothing to do and living out his days in the midst of community coffee mornings. But he's there because of his wife (Jenny Agutter), who wanted to come home.

Syd, meanwhile, is like a big puppy dog. He goes where Maurice goes, and is really a bit of a bumbling oaf. It seems to run in the family - Syd's son is in a bit of trouble and needs to pay back some ne'er-do-wells 18 grand. There's only one thing for it - The Invisibles have got to get back together, pull off one last heist and help out Syd's son. Maurice isn't that keen, but they stage a disastrous rehearsal on one of their old associate's home (one of the blokes out of Only Fools And Horses). While Maurice (a safe cracker) takes too long to crack the safe, Syd is all over the shop and falls over everything. It wasn't an enjoyable scene - so predictable and not really that funny.

After trying to convince each other that they've still got it, they come across the landlord of the local pub (Dean Lennox Kelly from Shameless), who seems more than interested in the pair. Turns out that this guy, Hedley, is the son of the third Invisible who died a while back. He wants to take his father's place in the team, but Maurice isn't so keen.

The problem of Syd's son remains and, after some soul searching, they decide to go through with the heist - they're going to knock off the debt collectors and pay them back with their own money. When they get caught it's Hedley that comes to the rescue. Hedley is part of the team.

I've never really seen Anthony Head in a starring role before, and he was pretty good. Quite menacing. But smooth.

Warren Clarke was weird for me. I like him and he plays the gruff cop very well, but here he plaed the slightly divvy oaf and, well I don't know. I just didn't like this very much.

It was dull, clunky, very predictable and very... mediocre, with more than a passing resemblance to New Tricks. It was very, very, crushingly mediocre. Fair enough, it's a gentle, easy-going towards-the-end-of-the-week drama and there might be some fun to be had in future episodes when the three of them have to keep their secret occupations away from their spouses and the motley crew of townsfolk, but I'm pretty certain there won't be.

I didn't watch this because I feared it would be just as you described. I'm afraid the trailers alone were enough to put me RIGHT off!
