Trailer Trash: Life On Mars, erm, American TV Channel ABC

By Paul Hirons on May 20th, 2008 6 comments

I posted up a picture of Life On Mars USA the other day, and it looked pretty good. And now, here’s a trailer. The pro-Brit lot are already starting to carp, but c’mon… it’s an American show and it has American things in it. I think it looks alright, to be honest. The only thing I have a slight problem with is how the muscly, tanned Sam Tyler can easily beat-up Gene Hunt. That wouldn’t happen in the British version. Anyway, tell us what you think! I like the police cars in this very much.

Looks like, as expected, it will enjoy those super-duper American production values, and sure I can forgive them replacing the obvious British cultural references with obvious Yankee ones – it’s an American show after all. But why make those little changes that appear to be totally pointless, other than “because we can”? 1973 becomes 1972. Huh? Would have been nice if they’d credited it’s country of origin too, instead of simply calling it an “international” hit.

Ah its that guy from Slapper, I love that movie. And that other guy is from Rescue me… god my brain is a black hole of useless information :)
I kind of agree with John on the international, but perhaps they wanted to hype it up or something (wouldnt put it pass them :)
But where is the Ford Cortina?

I’m looking forward to this. The UK Life On Mars was never about The Seventies anyway, it was about ‘The Seventies’, an imagined, TV version of that era. It was a show about old shows. It will be interesting therefore to see Americans pillaging their own TV history for source material. I guess setting it a year earlier places the show just slightly more squarely in the US’s tumultous period of post-60s fall-out, so there’s maybe more material for them.

Well 1973 came from the year Life On Mars, the Bowie song, was released as a single in the UK. It never was put out as a single in the US, but Starman was a hit in 1972 in the US, and they appear to be using themes from that track in the trailer rather than Life On Mars, which makes sense.

I”m a bit dubious but i’ll give it a try. I expect, as far as cars go, it’ll be a big whoop-ass Detroit muscle car like a Challenger or Mustang or something.
