Pulling (BBC Three, Monday, 31 March, 11pm) seems to have sneaked under the radar. I know virtually nothing about it and I've no idea whether it's a repeat or... I've just got no idea. Is it cool to like the show? Is it tragically hip? Is it much loathed? You're asking the wrong person. All I know is that sporadically, I've tuned in, and found myself strangely enchanted by a comedy that is few in laughs and blearily peered at through amazingly drunken eyes.
Throughout pulling, I've seen some monumental drinking sessions. I'm surprised someone hasn't lost an eye or something. Now, the type of drinking seen in this show isn't Father Jack styled garbling... but rather... very real drunken falling down grazing a knee and being sick in a hedge drunk. Seeing as it's a comedy, it's generally pretty depressing. Everyone has huge hang-ups, there's no laughter track (thank god) and booze usually means trouble.
I could dissect last night's show for you, but it seems pointless. Why? Well, unless you've been watching it, a dissection won't mean a thing to you... and if you have been tuning in, then you already know what's going on don't you? No. I think it's better to oversee the show, look at what makes it tick. Even if the 'tick' is of a nervous variety.
The basic premise of the show is three women who can't quite cope. Cope with what? Well, just about anything that comes their way. The promo shots for the programme make it look like Smack The Pony or something... but it's a world away from that. This is a comedy that's as black as a cigarette blown lung. Relationships go disasterously wrong and attempts at looking cool in front of mates and would-be shags tend to end up crying in bus-stops or slumped on sofas wondering where it all went wrong.
There's something of Withnail & I about this show. Okay, it's not set in the late sixties and there's no ill advised trip to the countryside with a randy gay uncle... but the hue is definitely as dim and the scrapes and wallowing is often accompanied by some scything aside. In last night's show, a former sex offender is goaded by a very Withnail-esque young carnage magnet, said former flasher gets battered by an on-off fling, a girl plants an unwanted lesbian kiss on an old pal, there are tears, covers are blown... and all in 30 minutes or so. It's action packed stuff.
Like I said earlier, I've no idea if this show is cool or loved, but it's captured my attention more than once... which is unusual for a new show. There's no reason to like the characters as they're completely hopeless... but there's something of us in the girls. They're finding themselves in the time of life when everything should look like This Life. However, they've found themselves as hapless as they were when they were fumbling through their mid-teens. This is a multiple car-crash of a show... and y'know what? I'm really liking it.

I don't care whether it's cool to like this show or not. I just do. The first series was on last year & was 3 episodes if I remember rightly. Then there was Rob Brydon's Annually Retentive. Then Sharon went off & wrote Angelos (bit hit & miss) & now she's back to co-writing this. It consistently hits the right side of funny & Paul Kaye is consistently brilliant (way better than Dennis Pennis or Mike Strutter). It's a shame this is buried away late at night but presumably at any other time would have to be toned down somewhat (you can't make sex offender jokes at 4pm on a Saturday I suppose). Glad you like it too. I thought I was the only one!

I absolutely love Pulling and can't understand how it hasn't been applauded as much as Gavin & Stacey. I guess G&S is more mainstream, but Pulling appeals to a generation of 30 something's who are valiantly trying to HAVE FUN in their single lives. It's so close to the bone, sharp and clever. I love it.
