Gavin & Stacey has been a big hit for BBC Three, and it's been a big hit in this house too. James Corden, Joanna Page and Mathew Horne have been everywhere promoting the show, The Sun has got behind it big time and it's been winning awards left, right and centre. This series is now mainstream. I missed it first time around, but was so glad I started to watch it. This second series has been fantastic, and last night it was over already. Last week, Gavin and Stacey were back in their home towns, and their marriage was facing a serious threat.
Talking on the phone with Gavin, Stacey decided that it was her turn to visit Gavin. The news that her estranged daughter-in-law was to visit sent Pam into fits. She was furiously scrubbing and wanting to clear away Mick's golf clubs. Pam knew that this trip could go some way in determining where Stacey was going to live. She didn't want her to choose Barry's Island, as she called it.
Back in Barry, Nessa and Gwen were reading books. "It's a cracking feeling when you finish a book," said Gwen. Nessa, who was reading The Satanic Verses, agreed. Bryn bounded in his puppy-dog way and explained that he had just bought a new, 6GB iPod. And he only went in for a Nano!
Soon Nessa was having contractions. Bryn was timing them meticulously, even measuring, ahem, Nessa's dilations with his fingers. He even taped the headphones of his new iPod and piped in some soothing Jack Johnson into Nessa tum to calm her down.
By this time the word had reached Essex that Nessa was in labour, but Gavin and Stacey were struggling. Mick and Pam had offered to give them some money for a new house, but this made Stacey feel even more trapped. She loved Gavin, she said, but she supposed that they didn't realise how big the differences in their lives were. She was already to jack it all in.
Stacey rode off with Mick and Pam back to Wales, while Gavin went to find Smithy. In Barry, the crew were off to the hospital. Nessa had to sign in and reveal her real name - Vanessa Shanessa Jenkins. She was soon ready to go ("I'm on the gas, I am," she said with a huge smile on her face. "It's messing with my head, I'm not gonna lie to you."). She asked Dave if he fancied a shag ("That's the gas talking," Bryn assured everyone). Probably not a good thing in those circumstances. She chose Stacey as her birthing partner type person and they went down with the midwife to have the baby.
"You might find it easier if you go down on all fours," the midwife said. "I usually do... it's a home from home for me that love," replied Nessa. "And me," said Stacey and the midwife in unison.
Gavin had finally found Smithy, and they sped to Wales. When they got to the Severn Bridge toll they were 10p short, so Smithy took some drastic action and lifted the the barrier himself. Despite an over-chatty policeman, they managed to get to the hospital just after the baby - a boy - was born. Sweet.
The terrific episode ended with Gavin and Stacey (with Stacey's wedding ring back on) snogging in the corridor.
I've just heard on the news that the show has won two Baftas. 'Nuff said. Best comedy series on the box - warm, laugh-out-loud funny, makes you smile (No, makes you feel GREAT!), a little bit soapy, great cast, great writing. What more could you want? Oh, maybe series three...
