There’s loads on Thursday night. Heroes (BBC Two, 9pm), Come Dine With Me (Channel 4, 8pm), Grey’s Anatomy (Five, 10pm), My Name Is Earl (Channel 4, 10pm) have all been talked about on these pages, so I’m going to see what The Invisibles (BBC One, Thursday, 1 May, 9pm) is like (I’m afforded that opportunity thanks to watching the new Heroes on BBC Three last week). So what’s this Invisibles all about then?
The Invisibles comes from the pen of William Ivory who has brought us Faith, episodes of Minder, A Thing Called Love and Common as Muck. So, if you’re a fan of more gentle comedies, this is the one for you. Think New Tricks and you won’t be far wrong. So what’s it about? Well, Warren Clarke (the toady one from Dalziel And Pascoe), Anthony Head (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Little Britain fame) and Dean Lennox Kelly (Shameless) all star as lovable criminals. Maurice Riley (Head) and Syd Woolsey (Clarke) are old cons who return from living it up on the Costa del Crime, where they have spent their ill-gotten gains, to a quiet Devon fishing village, where they plan to eke out their retirement fishing and availing themselves of the NHS.
Naturally, the quiet life is not for them and, with money running short, they quickly find themselves drawn back into a life of crime, only to find that crime has moved on and they have got new things to learn. Hedley (Lennox) is the 30-something-year-old son of the late Vernon Huthwaite, Syd and Maurice’s former partner in crime. When Hedley hears Syd and Maurice are planning to put down roots locally, he wants in on the action.
William Ivory says: “It’s a dream of a cast. And what’s especially brilliant is the breadth of the talent on board. The Invisibles is an ensemble piece which means every character relies on the one next to them to give full value in terms of what the script is trying to achieve. And that means, in an ideal world, you’re looking to fill every role with a heavy hitter – but in truth you seldom achieve that. This time, I think we have…”
Let’s see shall we?
