Bad news for folks interested in Gavin and Stacey after seeing it on the Bafta's last night. The co-creators (and co-stars) of Bafta-winning Gavin and Stacey (don't start that again - Ed) have revealed there may not be another series of the popular BBC Three sitcom. Gutted. James Corden and Ruth Jones, who write the show said they were currently working on a Christmas special of the show. Does this means it's going the same way as The Office and bowing out after a special one-off?
"We never intended to write a second series let alone a third," said Jones. "We don't want it to become predictable. We will see how the Christmas special goes and take it from there." Corden added: "We will write one if we can make it better. We have to be true to ourselves."
The show is BBC Three's biggest breaker since Little Britain and after last night's success, I thought 'that's going to BBC Two'. Seems I could be wrong. After fending off The Apprentice for the viewer vote at the Bafta's (which I, like many, thought would trounce a niche comedy show), Gavin and Stacey is clearly more popular than we all thought... and it's great news for new comedy.
Picking up his award, Corden said Jones was "not just the greatest writer and actress, she is the best friend anyone could hope for and is as much Smithy as I am, and I share this with her". It's been a good spell for the show, as the programme has already picked Broadcasting Press Guild and South Bank Show awards, as well as three prizes at the British Comedy Awards.
Will you be sad to see it go?
